First Mass Controversy: Magellan's Mazaua, Limasawa or Butuan?

It's the 489th anniversary of the historic first mass in the Philippines where Ferdinand Magellan (Fernao de Magalhaes, Fernando Magallanes), a Portuguese in the service of the Spanish crown, celebrated the Catholic rite on Easter Sunday of 1521.

The day, March 31, 1521, was on an island recorded by Magellan's chronicler as Mazaua but the issue on Mazaua's exact location is still hot debated by several groups that even the National Historical Institutes stand on the issue is not accepted.

The official NHI stand points to Limasawa Island off the coast of Leyte, an island without a harbor making it impossible to be the lost harbor of Magellan according to others. Another claim is that Mazaua is in Butuan, but Butuan is not an island (unless geomorphologists can really prove the island of Mazaua is now part of Butuan where the balangay boats were excavated). The third claim is the area of Pinamanculan-Bancasi.

The issue can only be settled unless archeologists can dig up artifacts attesting to the claims or any person who witnessed the event resurrects on Easter Sunday.

The latter seems improbable and the former needs lots of money and time. For now the controversy and debate will go on the issue: “Where is the site of the first mass?"

Annually, a Tridentine Mass is held at Bood Promontory in Pinamanculan, Butuan to commemorate the first mass while there's also a commemoration in Magallanes, Limasawa island, Southern Leyte (that still some quarters claim happened in Barangay Triana, not Magallanes)

Are you still not confused? :P

489 years and counting, that's how long the search for Magellan's lost harbor has been going on.

---

Other significant events of March 1521:

March 28, 1521, Ferdinand Magellan's three ship Armada de Molucca anchored on Mazaua

The first blood compact in the islands, to be known later as The Philippines, happened between Ferdinand Magellan and Raia Siaiu. (This is contrary to the misinformed claims of some Boholanos that the Sandugo, the blood compact between Legazpi and Sikatuna in the island of Bohol was the first treaty of "friendship." The said Sandugo was also not honored by the Spaniards when they later enslaved the Filipinos so why celebrate the historically-inaccurate Sandugo Festival?)

Magellan then took ownership of the island group and named it Islas de San Lazaro for it was the feast day of San. Lazaro. The name shall only be changed to Islas de Filipinas, by Ruy Lopez de Villalobos more than two decades later.

MMDA Number Coding Suspended Holy Week 2011

A bit of surprise news from MMDA where they will implement the suspension of number coding scheme, formally called Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) starting Tuesday (April 19, 2011) until Friday (April 22, 2011). The MMDA usually suspends "color coding" on Holy Thursday and Good Friday only.

UPDATE: latest news on MMDA Number Coding

MMDA number coding bans a vehicle with certain last digit to travel on certain days from 7am to 10am and 3pm to 7pm. There's a number coding window of 10am to 3pm where those banned from the roads can safely travel without fear of a traffic violation ticket (TVR).

In Pasig City, number coding is from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm. Travel window of 10am 'til 4pm.

Note that in Makati, number coding remains in effect on April 19 and April 20 (Holy Tuesday and Holy Wednesday) due to its being the independent "Republic of Makati," and suspended on Holy Thursday (April 21, 2011) and Good Friday (April 22, 2011).

Besides Metro Manila, Baguio City has similar number coding scheme implemented in Baguio CBD.

Palm Grove Hot Springs Resort, Asin, Tuba Benguet

For people who'll be flocking to Baguio City during the Holy Week (when even SM Baguio is open during the time), here's updated information and pictures of one of the hot spring resorts in Asin, Tuba, Benguet for your information.

Tutubi went to Asin, in an unplanned trip thus unarmed with information on details except his usual adventurous heart to explore places beyond the usual tourist spots, he was able to do ocular inspection of Palm Grove Spring and Mountain Resort where he was able to take photos of the swimming pools of the resort facility.

There are two primary Asin hot spring resorts: Palm Grove Spring and Mountain Resort and River View. The former is more modern in look while the latter is more of the nature type in accommodations and general resort appearance.

Palm Grove Hot Springs and Mountain Resort Photos of swimming pools (Olympus 1050SW camera):

They have cottage rentals for daytrips and overnight accommodations available. please call Palm Grove Resort's contact numbers for the current room rates, function hall rentals for events (parties, weddings et al), promos, massage, spa, jacuzzi prices and costs and other inquiries. As of posting time, no official website still.

No reviews of Palm Grove resort for Tutubi merely visited the place in a very limited time, he took very few pictures and went ahead to look for a place to eat (it's around 12nn when arrived there). No information on restaurant menu prices.

Other Asin Hot Spring Resorts in the area include Riverview Waterpark (not River View Resort) which is the first one you'll see on the road. There are about two other Asin Hot Spring Resorts but not as noticeable as the mentioned two.

How to get to Hot Spring Resorts in Asin, Tuba, Benguet:

Commuting to Asin hotsprings is easy though it's about an hour from Baguio City proper. To get there by public transport, look for jeepneys going to Asin Hotsprings near Baguio Public Market (upper palengke) (Note: jeepneys with signboard Asin Road do not go there, probably near Km. 6 only. Kilometer zero marker in Baguio is near Burnham Park, and there's a reference for the original Kilometer Zero marker from Rizal Park in Manila for reference). The jeepney will make the return trip to Baguio Plaza near public hotspring swimming pool. Jeepney Fare: P22.00

Driving directions to Asin Hot Spring Resorts, Tuba, Benguet:

For those with their own cars and vehicles, you just need to find Asin Road all the way to the your target hotspring resorts in Asin (tip: you may follow Asin Road jeeps until you see the resort billboards). You will pass by Bencab Museum, at least two steel bridges, kilometers of zigzag roads and two tunnels (that locals call "tatlong araw at dalawang gabi" pertaining to the three days and 2 nights when entering and leaving the access tunnels to the town of Tuba. Travel time is less than an hour and about 16 kilometers from Baguio Plaza.

If you have your own GPS, you may contact Tutubi for the GPX tracklogs and waypoints of his trip, one of his first foray into GPS mapping with his shiny new Garmin Nuvi 1300 :P

The Truth About Boracay's "Green Tide": Seaweed, Moss or Algae?

A friend of Tutubi, currently on vacation in Boracay to avoid the "SRO crowd" of Boracay during Holy Week, texted him to ask why Boracay's White Beach is littered with green "seaweeds" in the morning.

Tutubi replied, unknown to many, the true science behind Boracay's "green tide" phenomenon highly visible during the hot summer months of March, April and May and absent during the rainy season.

boracay green algae seaweed moss the green algae on the beach of Boracay early morning

Locals when asked about the green algae will usually answer the phenomenon is due to absence of waves during summer but the truth into it is the presence of nutrients in the water that's feeding those green algae. Not that Boracay's water is dirty but those nutrients sustaining green algae should be kept in check to limit their growth.

Numerous scientific studies specifically point to high levels of ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, and phosphate, usually found near factories but traced from inadequately treated sewage, waste water or leaked from septic tanks or sanitation systems. There was also a time several years ago when fecal coliform bacteria (e. coli) in Boracay hugged the headlines but the level is now well below dangerous threshold (so don't worry and just enjoy the beach).

That's the sad truth about Boracay's green algae as explained by science.

By the way, those stuff is actually algae, not green seaweed nor green moss.

Recommended Boracay Holy Week Events/Activities?

Traditionally Holy Week is spent in the provinces to participate in various Holy Week events and activities like Visita Iglesia but recent trends always now point to a beach vacation and the first place that comes to mind is Boracay (some people go to Puerto Galera or any other beach near Metro Manila).

boracay grotto willy's rockA pilgrimage to the Grotto or Willy's rock:Boracay's famous landmark at Station 1 should form part of Boracay Holy Week activities for a Catholic on vacation

Ideally, Holy Week in Boracay should be like this for Catholics but Boracay is actually teeming with "millions" of people spending the long vacation there including showbiz stars and celebrities.

Tutubi doesn't like the crowds and prefers off-the-beaten-track destinations. He doesn't see himself going back to Boracay in the near future out of his own pocket.

LRT MRT Holy Week Train Schedules

For people, either by choice or by "force" staying in Metro Manila, herewith is the operating schedules of Manila's LRT and MRT for the benefit of the commuting public.

Basically, the MRT, LRT and LRT2 will cease operating on Holy Thursday up to Easter Sunday for maintenance (as there's also na expected drop in passenger volume) and will resume normal operations on April 5, 2010. This is consistent with their released annual announcements of the previous years.

March 29, 2010 Monday NORMAL SCHEDULE 5am to 11pm
March 30, 2010 Tuesday NORMAL SCHEDULE 5am to 11pm
March 31, 2010 Wednesday NORMAL SCHEDULE 5am to 11pm

Boracay ATV Rental Rates (Dune Buggies and Bug Cars too)

Most people going to Boracay always just stay on White Beach and go island-hopping, and unable to see and experience the various thrills and adventures also present on Boracay e.g. the kitesurfing, kiteboarding and windsurfing on Bulabog Beach, trek to Mt. Luho, the highest peak of Boracay Island and a late afternoon visit to the Bat Cave (when the bats come out of the cave by the thousands).

Herewith is updated information on Boracay ATV retal rates provided by a friend of Tutubi who recently went to Boracay.

The best way to get to Mt. Luho is on-board an ATV-- all terrain vehicles -- that can be rented from various ATV rental shots in barangay Yapak (a tricycle ride away from White Beach)

boracay atvAll Terrain vehicles (ATV) parked near Mount Luho Viewpoint. Most of the off-roaders were Koreans and other foreigners

The ATVs are automatic so it only has brakes and accelerators and designed for safe use on rought roads (as long as you drive properly and wear proper safety equipment and features). Usual route is to go up to Mt. Luho and Butterfly Garden of Fairways and Bluewater Golf and Country Club

ATV Rental Companies in Boracay:

G1 ATV (near Eco Village) in Hagdan: P500/hour

Best One Rentals: the largest ATV rental company on Boracay Island, near
Diniwid Beach

Most of the shops can be found near the gate of Fairways and Bluewater. Dune Buggies and ATV rental rates in Boracay range from P300/hour to P1000/hour depends on size of the vehicle.

Do you need a drivers license to drive an ATV in Boracay? Legally, yes, for it's similar to a motorcycle where you're required to have the drivers license inclusion 1. But as always, the law is not enforced strictly.

You may call ATV rental company's telephone number for the latest rates, price discounts and reservations...but if you're on a limited budget and want to explore Boracay's off-the-beaten-track attractions, you can also rent out motorcycles or charter tricycles (per hour rate starts at P100 depends on your haggling skills) for cheap DIY Boracay adventure tours.

Camping, Climbing, Trekking Mt. Pulag Banned Indefinitely

Tutubi, for some time now, has been eyeing a trek to Mt. Pulag, the Philippines' second highest peak and the home numerous unique species and lots of still undocumented flora and fauna

Although he's hearing news about the beauty of the pristine place up high in the clouds, there are also various reports of environmental destruction particularly the still pervasive kaingin method of slash and burn that destroy the unique habitat and ecosystem of the place.

A recent Inquirer.net news article is both a disappointment and welcome news for Tutubi that a closure of several trails of Mt. Pulag will allow the forest to heal and prevent forest fires.

Tutubi supports such initiatives, much like the closure of Mt Banahaw to trekkers, to allow the forest to heal and protect the mountain from further destruction and also irresponsible tourists and trekkers who leave their trash on the mountain trail (even campers and climbers from some "educated" mountaineering groups do this)

For all you aspiring trekkers and mountain climbers, please be reminded of the old saying: "Take nothing but pictures; leave nothing but footprints"

--
Mt. Pulag National Park, with an elevation of 2,992 meters above sea level, has various trails via Kabayan. Benguet. This off-limits policy will affect the livelihood of tour guides, sherpas, and summer Mt. Pulag tour operators will lose business while this is in effect but the greater good will result in this initiative.

Sabin Resort Hotel, Ormoc, Leyte

If you ask an Ormocanon on where's the best place to stay in Ormoc, the usual answer would be Sabin Resort Hotel, a beachfront facility a few minutes drive (or jeepney ride) away from Ormoc City proper.

Tutubi was able to visit the place recently and offers a few pictures of the place as well as his observations and impressions of Sabin Resort Hotel but no full-blown review on food, staff and service as he did not actually stay there.

Photos of Sabin Resort Hotel:

One of the "living rooms" with native furniture in use

Sabin Resort Hotel is a beach front resort, nice sunset but the beach is actually rocky, so don't get your hopes up for a nice beach resort in Ormoc

Review of Sabin Resort Hotel:

Note: Tutubi only inspected the place and didn't actually stay there (he stayed at OCCCI Hostel in the middle of Ormoc). All he can say is that the swimming pool looks really nice, snakes around the resort facility but the beach, being a beach front resort, is far from being good, no white sand beaches in this part of the world called Ormoc Bay, probably why Sabin is a resort but not a beach resort.

Baguio Cathedral: Mass Schedule, Then and Now Photos

"I visit Baguio cathedral every time I'm in Baguio" claimed by Tutubi's officemate that's why even if it's getting late and "millions" of people crowding the narrow snake roads of Baguio City, they hied off to the hill where The Our Lady of Atonement, the formal name of Baguio Cathedral, stands.

Pictures of Baguio Cathedral, now and then:

Baguio Cathedral Mass Schedules:

Sunday: hourly morning masses start from 5am to 12nn; afternoon masses at 3pm to 7pm. All masses in English except 5am and 9am masses in Ilocano and 10am mass in Tagalog.

Latest Thailand Travel Advisory: Bangkok Rally on March 12, 2010

For readers of this blog who are planning to visit Bangkok, Thailand on Friday, March 12, 2010, please re-consider if you can due to the planned anti-government rally in the sprawling capital may result to disruptions, violence or get stranded like what happened in 2008 when Bangkok International Airport (Suvarnabhumi Airport) was shut down by protesters/demonstrators that resulted to flight cancellations stranding passengers for weeks

If you can can't postpone your non-essential travel, try to get out of the capital if not out of the country by train/bus to neighboring Cambodia or Vietnam.

For people already in Thailand, you are advised to avoid meeting areas and staging areas of the protesters, the so called "Red Shirts," supporting Thaksin, the ousted form leader of Thailand.

This has happened before and may happen now. Try to stay tuned for the latest news on Bangkok rallies for your safety considerations.

How to Apply/Renew ePassports: Application Requirements at New DFA-OCA

For people wishing to apply for epassports for the first time or those renewing their green passports, (falsely said to have expired january 2010) like Tutubi, here's information for you, people.

There's a new Department of Foreign Affairs Office of Consular Affairs building (DFA-OCA) to handle specifically the ePassport, the electronic authentication system, the electronic visa system, and digital consular records system.

DFA ePassport Application Requirements:

Click here for the updated and complete requirements.

Tip: No need to bring pictures as photographs of passport applicants will be taken by data capturing machines (data collected include signatures and biometrics)

Bring only genuine documents as the system can detect fraud and tampering. Fake documents can get you in trouble. (The ePassport can also turn the fake passport businesses of Recto bankrupt)

DFA ePassport Application Process:

1. Check the passport requirements and secure an online appointment at http://www.dfa.gov.ph (consular tab), or to call the DFA consular helpline number (+63.2.556.0000) or DFA telephone number (+63.2.834.4000). Applications may also be filed with the DFA's 19 Regional Consular and satellite offices.

2. Set an appointment by going online through its dedicated website or by calling 737-1000. (For travel agencies/agents, secure an appointment at the DFA website, email at scheduler@dfa-appointment.net, or call these DFA appointment hotlines +63.2.834.4961; +63.2.834-4855; and +63.2.834.3707.

3. After completing all required transactions, you can go back to the DFA-OCA on your scheduled release date of your new passport or have passport home delivery via various accredited DFA couriers.

DFA (Department of Foreign Affairs)
Office of the Consular Affairs (OCA)
Address: Macapagal Avenue corner Bradco Street
Aseana Business Park, Paranaque City
(a few minutes from SM Mall of Asia (MOA))
DFA Hotline: +63.2.834.4000

Commute to DFA Consular Office: from LRT Buendia Station, look for shuttle buses on Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue, near Taft Avenue going to SM Mall of Asia via Macapagal Avenue. Request the driver to drop you off near the new DFA office.

For those with cars, Tutubi has yet to verify if there's parking at DFA-OCA (or you can park at SM Mall of Asia (MOA) then take a jeep or taxi there.

Baguio Panagbenga Festival 2010: Grand Float Parade

On its fifteenth year of staging colorful festivals, Baguio Panagbenga Festival, patterned after the New Years Day Rose Parade in Pasadena, is a festival of flower-covered floats and marching bands showcasing the colorful flowers of the Cordilleras.

Panagbenga Festival 2010 Photos (taken on Session Road cor. Perfecto St):

Samsung audio-video themed float
Megalopolis, perhaps a property developer

Panagbenga 2010 Stargazing:

Various showbiz personalities hied off to Baguio to ride on the flower-bedecked floats like Valerie Concepcion, Karylle, Pauleen Luna et al (it so happens Tutubi is not fond of showbiz that's why he can't identify the stars he saw that day)

GMA 7 Kapuso Stars with Camelot-themed float.

GMA Kapuso stars (Pocholo?). No float from rival ABS-CBN that day
pauleen lunaPauleen Luna on the San Miguel beer float

All in all, there were 24 floats showcased for Panagbenga 2010 (Tutubi can't remember how many were there in 2003, the first time he witnessed the event).

The float parade started at around 8:20am and finished shortly before 10am.

Tutubi's tip: try to be along the Panagbenga Festival parade route as early as 6am to get a "front row" seat on Session Road and other streets along the way. There are temporary stages/benches where you can seat but those get reserved very early. There really are too many people seeing the festival up close. If only festival organizers can lengthen the parade route to allow spectators to spread out instead of concentration on jam-packed Session Road (na di mahulugan ng karayom). If you're a photographer, try to secure special passes so you can walk in the middle of the road and get the best vantage points, instead of just trying your luck on the sidewalk.

Lastly, book your bus trips and Baguio accommodations early particularly those near the Panagbenga parade route (maps available online if you want) so that you can easily walk or view the parade outside your hotel window.

---
Tutubi has seen Panagbenga in an unplanned trip in 2003, this time however is not much different except he got free accommodations from an officemate and early bus tickets from Victory Liner.

Personally, Tutubi prefers the "audience participation" style of Ati-atihan festival (Kalibo, Aklan), the authentic father of all Philippine festivals. It seems Panagbenga festival is only about the flowers and showcasing less and less of genuine culture of the Cordilleras making the festival less authentic. When Tutubi was there in 2003 it was Ricky Martin's "Living La Vida Loca" played by the marching band instead of authentic music of the Cordillera people. The 2010 edition featured knights, princes and princesses that's so un-Cordillera, not even Filipino-- no wonder Philippine tourism is not that well-known due to misplaced preferences.

The commendation goes for the festival organizers for not allowing slimy politicians to parade their own floats though. (there were the Bongbong Marcos, and Gilbert Remulla, Manny Villar et al)

Victory Liner Deluxe Bus to Baguio (Cubao/Pasay)

In the absence of direct flights from Manila to Baguio, the most convenient public transportation going to Baguio is offered by Victory Liner via its deluxe bus service to the summer capital.

Tutubi recently went to Baguio for an official trip that coincided with the Panagenga Festival. He first took an ordinary aircon bus Cubao to Baguio (mainly because his officemate wasn't able to reserve ticket on time which usually sold out early for the Baguio flower festival) and the deluxe bus service on the return flight.

Victory Liner Deluxe Bus service is called as such that it uses a special 29-seater bus equipped with its own toilet/CR/washroom (aircraft terminology: lavatory), a service attendant (sterwardess or "flight" attendant) and bus fare inclusive of light snacks (a bottle of mineral water and pack of Cream-O chocolate cookies). The seats can be reclined much more than the those of the ordinary aircon buses, comes equipped with legrests and footrests to make your legs stretch just enough for you to lie down. Also unlike the ordinary aircon bus trips, the deluxe service don't make three stopovers due to the presence of the on-board lavatory taking about 45 minutes off the travel time.

victory liner baguio bus terminalVictory Liner Baguio bus terminal

inside the Victory Liner bus station filled with people leaving Baguio after the Panagbenga Festival

The deluxe bus service's 29 seats, all equipped with seat belts, are numbered 1 to 29 with seat numbers 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 17, 20, 23, 26 on the left column window side; seat numbers 3, 6, 9, 12, 19, 22, 25, 29 right column, window side (recommended if you want to be alone or disturbed by your seatmate). The rest are middle aisle side. Seat number 19, the seat of Tutubi, is facing the toilet.

There are also two video monitors for films shown during the trip. (They played Sherlock Holmes and Surrogate with Blu-ray copies, pirated films really)

victory liner deluxe busthe deluxe bus service comes with ample leg room, much more than the ordinary aircon buses, reclining seats, and leg rest but not not enough for you to lie down.

Bus fare is P200 more than the ordinary aircon bus fare but worth it for incontinent people (not Tutubi. He didn't even use the CR during the entire trip) or those looking for "first class" service. :P

Tips:

Call Victory Liner telephone number for ticket reservations to reserve tickets and pick up a few days before the trip to avoid ticket cancellations. This is specially true for holidays particularly long weekends and Holy Week and peak season that is Panagbenga Festival on the last Sunday of February.

If you're like Tutubi who enjoys the "trees and not just the forests" by looking out the window to see the scenery, request to be seated window side. To avoid direct sunlight when traveling during the day, request to be seated on the left column (facing the driver) when traveling from Manila to Baguio in the morning and right column in the afternoon since you're basically traveling northbound.

A similar Gold bus service by Philtranco plies the Manila to Legazpi City and Manila to Daet (Camarines Norte) route taken by Tutubi in 2008 for the Daet and Calaguas Island trip.

Cubao to Baguio trip schedule: 10:50pm daily (travel time 6 hours via NLEX-SCTEx)
Baguio to Manila trip schedule: 1:15pm daily (travel time 6 hours, no stopovers)
Victory Liner Deluxe Bus Fare: P650.00
Victory Liner Ordinary Bus Fare to Baguio: P450.00

Ordinary buses stopovers: Balagtas, Bulacan; Tarlac, and Singson, Pangasinan

On the return route: bus stops are Camachile on NLEX and on EDSA there's Paramount (the no longer extant Paramount Theater at the corner of West Avenue and EDSA in front of SM City North EDSA), Quezon Avenue (under the Quezon Avenue viaduct in front of Centris Station), and Kamuning and finally at Victory Liner Cubao Station.

Free GPS Maps Download: Open Street Map and RoadGuide

Tutubi's got a new toy to take with him on his travels: a Garmin Nuvi 1300 mounted on the dashboard of Sakura (his car's name) or handheld during his recent travels.

Of course, a GPS device won't work properly without a working and updated map of the Philippines.

There currently are two free GPS maps of the Philippines for download:

OpenStreetMap Philippines (OSM) and RoadGuide.ph

There are also commercial Philippine GPS Maps with subscription service (e.g. AVT) but no first-hand information on their accuracy is present.

Tutubi has been using OSM for a few weeks now and been checking accuracy (and if it can really be trusted if you're not familiar with the place you intend to visit. Better to check the place out using a map or satellite imagery from Google maps and/or Wikimapia then use a GPS device (Garmin, Magellan, a Chinese made cheap GPS portable navigators for cars or those 2-DIN head units with GPS capability) as the maps aren't really perfect as of this time but usable.

Open Street Map vs Roadguide?

on the most updated, i still think it depends on the area you're interested in. All I know is that when it comes to my hometown Paete, Laguna, OSM rules (you probably know why and i'm biased for a change). Seriously, I prefer the open stule of OSM vs roadguide (where you need to contribute first before you can get the detailed map). I got into OSM since i got freely and "nagged" the maintainer by a barrage of questions from a newbie mapper. Now, I'm actively contributing to the map.

Use at your own risk, however, if you've found a bug or error, report/correct so that others after you will not be led astray :P

---
How to get the free GPS maps of the Philippines:
simply download the free GPS maps and follow the instructions on how to install them to your GPS device (e.g. Mapsource for Garmin GPS devices)

Note: GPS map of the philippines is not available for Tomtom, so beware, recommend Garmin Nuvi for beginners.
