Random Acts of Kindness to Strangers and Foreign Tourists

Something for Holy Week and Easter Sunday, even if most people are traveling to the beach but still remembering to observe the true Meaning of Lent, a random sharing of a few Tutubi's travel tales and random acts of kindness to foreigners and Filipinos he met at the airport.

This happened for about a year ago, unblogged but it's nice feeling to help others in need, without expecting something in return to total strangers and foreigners who can spread the word when they get back to their home countries.

Random Act of Kindness #1: The Dutch's Delayed Flight

Tutubi loves exit rows, even if he's of average height, he appreciates the extra legroom.

At one time during a delayed flight from Cebu, though he didn't request for it, the window side exit row was given to him upon check in. There, a lanky Dutch backpacker, probably about 6 feet 5 inches tall (the Dutch are said to be the tallest people in the world), sat beside him.

Tutubi started reading the inflight magazine when the Dutch started to ask him about the destination featured on the magazine, then began to tell tales of his stay in the Philippines and the reason he's coming back- he has a girlfriend in Cebu. He shared many other stuff people don't normally share to strangers. He's also worried of the risk that due to his delayed flight, he might miss his next flight out of Manila to get home to The Netherlands.

On deplaning, he saw the Dutch again waiting for an airport taxi to take him from NAIA Terminal 3 to NAIA Terminal 1 but the airport transfer shuttle bus has not yet arrived and time is running out.

Realizing that the Dutchman may not get to NAIA Terminal 1 in time for his flight, he approached the Dutchman again and offered him a ride in his car to which he accepted due to the urgency and with no airport taxi in sight.

There was slight traffic on Domestic Road near Manila Domestic Airport Terminal but they got to Terminal 1 with less about thirty minutes before his flight's ETD.

He even offered Tutubi PhP500.00 in gratitude, an offer which he refused. It's just about 20 minutes delay in getting home plus less than a liter of diesel fuel burned but it's a great feeling to be of help even to total strangers

How about you, have you any random act of kindness to share?

Trek to The Holy Cross on Mt. Ping-as, Pakil, Laguna

(this unplanned trip happened on December 31, 2012 (new years eve)

If Paete has the Tatlong Krus on top of Mt. Humarap, Pakil has single large cross on top of Mount Ping-as watching over the town of Pakil, which was once part of Paete town. The Crosses share some history as well as past (and long gone) resentment between the two towns on the demarcation line.

Tutubi initially wanted to trek up Tatlong Krus but later thought of Ping-as with his brother but ended up going there with his septuagenarian father, three of his brothers, nephews and nieces.

The Trek up Mt. Ping-as in Pictures:

the only water crossing. see the trail is easy even for senior citizens, much more for children

the last stretch of the trail up Mt. Ping-as has concrete steps going up the viewdeck and rest area

The Mt. Ping-as Rest Area where you can...rest?

Nuestra Senora de los Dolores de Turumba (Birhen ng Turumba) in glass at the rest area

The large cross is visible here, the dog included to add scale

a bird's eye view of Pakil town and Laguna de Bay, Tutubi was able to post this on Facebook due to presence of Globe 3G signal on the mountain belonging to the Sierra Madre mountain range. there was a slight drizzle that time thus the hazy picture

History of Ahunan sa Ping-as and the Krus ng Pakil:

This landmark of Pakil town hosts an annual festivity known as "Ahunan sa Ping-as" celebrated every last Saturday of May, where participants climb up the Sierra Madre mountain to witness the Santacruzan and attend the Holy Mass.

At the foot of the cross, you can see the bird's eye view of the town, which is 500 meters above sea level

The cross was erected there in 1671 in honor of Fr. Francisco Solier who used to carry a wooden cross as a devotion when climbing up the mountain of Ping-as. The wooden cross was later replaced with a concrete one and a 14 Stations of the Cross were set up along the road/trail leading to the mountain top.

When Pakil separated from Paete to become a town of its own, the people of Paete erected three crosses on top of neighboring Mt. Humarap that became the Tatlong Krus

    How to get there:

Follow this guide on to how to get to Pakil, Laguna. From Sta. Cruz, remember to request the driver to drop you off just near the boundary of Paete and Pakil (very near Pakil Cemetery) and not reach Pakil Church. There's a road going up the mountain with the words "Ahunan sa Mt. Ping-as" written on it to mark the start of the road/trail going there. (Tutubi wasn't able to plot the trail on his GPS to update OpenStreetMap but will do so in the future to give an accurante map of the trail)

If you came from Rizal via Siniloan, you'll pass by Lerma's halo-halo, Pakil Church, Pakil town plaza, Pakil municipal hall, and Turumba Springs Swimming Pool.

Things To Do in Manila in Holy Week Beyond Malls

In the days of yore, Metro Manila used to be a ghost town during Holy Week, all malls were closed and TV stations, if not broadcasting, showed movie/series marathons of Ten Commandments, The Passion of the Christ, Seventh Heaven or anything pre-programmed yet without or very few advertisements except the required station IDs by NTC

This post lists down what's closed and what's not during Holy Week in Metro Manila and places within three hours of travel time for city dwellers stuck in Manila.

    Holy Week Scenario in Manila

SM Malls are closed in Holy Week (on Holy Thursday and Good Friday and open on Black Saturday and Easter Sunday, March 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 2013) except the restaurants around SM Mall of Asia. Same situation with Trinoma, Greenbelt, Glorietta, Eastwood Mall, Walter Mart, Power Plant Mall, UP-Ayala Technohub, Shangri-la Mall, Greenhills Shopping Center, Robinsons Malls, Serendra, Market! Market! Alabang Town Center, Tiendesitas, Ali Mall, 168 Mall, Lucky China Town Mall, Gateway Mall, Shangri-la Plaza, The Podium, Ever Gotesco

The only shopping mall open on Maundy Thursday is Newport Mall in Resorts Manila Manila in front of NAIA Terminal 3

LRT, LRT2 and MRT shuts down on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, Black Saturday and Easter Sunday, resumes operation on Monday, April 1, 2013

List of Recommended Things to do in Metro Manila/Places to Visit Within the City

Visit Rizal Park and Intramuros (both of which are open whole year round, can't close them, that's why)

On Holy Thursday, do a Manila Visita Iglesia

Visit Manila Ocean Park, open all day during Holy Week

On Easter Sunday, come with the whole family to Star City open only a day in holy week.

For the curious, pay a visit to Quiapo Church to look for newly-blessed talismans, amulets, charms, and agimat sold in the church vicinity on Good Friday

Suggested Things to Do and Places to Visit Within Three Hours Travel Time from Manila:

Participate in the Alay Lakad to Antipolo Church by walking on Ortigas Avenue all the way towards the popular Catholic pilgrimage site (and car blessings)

Bring family with kids to Enchanted Kingdom (only on Black Saturday and Easter Sunday).

enchanted kingdom ferris wheelEnchanted Kingdom is open on March 30 and March 31 only from 11am to 9pm

Go Wakeboard in Nuvali in Sta. Rosa then cool down later in Tagaytay (Sky Ranch is an option though not recommended place at this time, there may be too many people with very limited parking spaces and heavy traffic)

Go on a roadtrip around Rizal and Laguna

Witness live crucifixion in Cutud, Pampanga

Visit the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Marilao, Bulacao

Do a Visita Iglesia in Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga, Cavite or Batangas

Make a pilgrimage trip to the Giant Mother Mary statue in Tanay, Rizal or the giant Jesus statue at
Kamay ni Hesus in Lucban Quezon.

giant mary regina rica tanay rizalthe giant statue of Mama Mary at Regina RICA in Tanay, Rizal

If you can't stand the heat of summer, particularly on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, just stay at home, take a bath from time to time, turn on the electric fan/aircon and the TV.

Just don't forget the true meaning of Lent and you'll be fine :P

Holy Week Travel Tip: withdraw money from ATM as early as possible to avoid long lines or offline ATM out of cash. All banks are closed from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday and banking services will resume only on April 1. Banks in malls (e.g. BDO, Chinabank, Bank of the Philippine Islands(BPI), Metrobank, PNB, RCBC, Landbank, Robinsons Bank, East West Bank, Unionbank, Security Bank, UCPB) possibly have only ATM online. Expect lots of off-line ATMs due to out of cash scenarios.

Republic Wakepark Nuvali Wakeboard Rates/Open Hours for Holy Week

Well this is not new as it's been open for almost a year now, making wakeboarding reachable to Manila denizens instead of going to CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC) in Camarines Sur or Lago de Oro in Batangas where Tutubi first tried wakeboarding.

Republic Wakepark Wakeboarding Rate (from Avida Land):
    1 hour pass – P250
    2 hour pass – P475
    4 hour pass – P595
    8 hour pass – P995
    Day & Night pass – P1,500
    Night riding pass – P595
    Private cable rent – P800/hour
    VIP pass – FREE!

Nuvali wakeboarding rate is affordable for Tutubi at P250/hour price is ok if you're looking for "sakit ng katawan" that the masochistic Tutubi enjoys.

Republic Waterpark Operating hours: open from 830am to 10pm, Monday to Sunday
No information yet if they're open in Holy Week (Holy Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Black Saturday and Easter Sunday but probably open for business)

ticket prices, restaurants, overnight accommodations, promos, discounts, group tours or wakeboarding lessons or summer workshops/classes for kids/children.

Baguio Number Coding Suspension Holy Week and Summer (March to April 2013)

Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan issued the number coding suspension news in anticipation of the influx of visitors to Baguio for the Holy Week and summer vacation from March 18 to April 12. The long suspension is also due to absence of students in schools due to the summer break.

Baguio City Number coding ordinance prohibits private vehicles in restricted areas surrounding Baguio central Business District including Session Road, Burnham Park, and Baguio City Market. It uses a similar system to MMDA Number Coding in Metro Manila using the last digit of car license plate numbers:

Last digit is 1 or 2: Monday (banned from 7am to 7pm)
Last digit is 3 or 4: Tuesday (banned from 7am to 7pm)
Last digit is 5 or 6: Wednesday (banned from 7am to 7pm)
Last digit is 7 or 8: Thursday (banned from 7am to 7pm)
Last digit is 9 or 0: Friday (banned from 7am to 7pm)

Baguio City Number coding is also suspended during other national holidays like Christmas Day, All Saints Day, Rizal Day, Holy Week (not just on Holy Thursday and Good Friday)and national election day.

Baguio City Number Coding Exemption passes are available for PhP500.00 (same as the number coding violation ticket penalty)

Review: Top Ten Best Restaurants in Laguna by Ang Pinaka

This list of Top 10 Laguna Restaurants compiled by the GMA 7 TV show "Ang Pinaka" was shown on TV last month. Tutubi has been to all restaurants at the top 5 and surprisingly not at the number 6 which is nearest to Paete. Strange but Patis Tesoro’s Kusina Salud (now Patis Tito Garden Café) ins San Pablo was not mentioned at all. Kamayan sa Palaisdaan deserves to be there as it's actually better than Isdaan Laguna, taste-wise and service-wise. Agree though that Exotikk Restaurant is not included.

Tutubi prefers Sulyap Gallery Cafe over Isdaan at any time, taste-wise and service-wise.

Go ahead, check out Tutubi's visits and independent reviews of the places he's visited and eaten at. Guaranteed no freebies, fee meals, or "pay to praise" here even rants and bashing bad service :P

    -----

Top 10 'Ang Pinaka' Yummy Restaurants in Laguna

    10. Ding Hao: Chinese Cuisine; National Highway, Brgy. Uno Calamba City, Laguna

    9. Baan Thai: Thai cuisine; located at 0631 Oregano Street Demarses Village Grove, Los Baños, Laguna

    8. Joe’s Italian Restaurant: Italian cuisine; Address at 10018 Pearl Street Umali Subdivision, Los Baños, Laguna

    7. Vista’s Art Space and Cafe: art space and dining space on Taft Street, Pakil, Laguna (just so near Paete yet Tutubi hasn't been here but probably not for long)

    6. Faustina’s Restaurant: patronized by students of UPLB located at Lola J Building, 10278 Ruby Street, Los Baños Subdivision, Los Baños, Laguna

    5. Café Arabela: a low ceiling house (actually a horse stable) at the town of Liliw serving pizza and pasta at frugal menu prices; located at 503 Rizal Street, Liliw, Laguna (just near Gat Tayaw Street, the tsinelas center of Liliw)

    4. Calle Arco: raved so much by Kris Aquino on Kris TV, it's good but not really very good with their own twists on pinoy cuisine; location: Rizal St., Brgy. Uno, Pagsanjan, Laguna (along Rizal St less than a kilometer from Pagsanjan Arc (Arco Real))

    3. Chef Mau Restaurant: eponymously named after the chef owner; location: Brgy. Bungkol, Liliw, Laguna (along the national road between Liliw and Magdalena). Menu ecommendation: Thai Tilapia and

    2. Sulyap Gallery Cafe and Restaurant: an old heritage house transplanted in a former hospital compound and turned into a restaurnat. Address: Brgy. del Remedios Cocoland Compound, San Pablo City, Laguna

ensaladang pako fern saladSulyap Restaurant's ensaladang pako (edible fern salad using fresh fiddlehead fern abundant on the slopes of Mt. Banahaw and Sierra Madre mountain range). The fern was fresh and crispy with the great balance of the saltiness of the itlog na maalat (salted egg) and sourness of the vinaigrette-like dressing. (a similar take of this exists at Chef Mau restaurant, Liliw, Laguna, another favorite place of Tutubi)

    1. Isdaan Restaurant and Fun Park: Filipino cuisine in palaisdaan (fishpond); located in Brgy. Hanggan, Calauan, Laguna. Usually full-packed and long wait list for tables specially on weekends. Nice place to have fun and not so expensive menu prices. Budget PhP250.00+/person

Note: Tutubi does not feature restaurants on this blog other than Filipino :P

Laguna: Visita Iglesia Route Map to 7 Churches, Itinerary

Visita Iglesia traditions are observed by Catholics in Holy Week to visit 7 churches. Herewith is the route map of Visita Iglesia in Laguna featuring old churches though information on churches can be found. Seven though for old churches in Laguna is not enough but it's also a sin if you try to visit even fourteen of them.

Tutubi's first memorable trip that also started his "travel career" was the unplanned tour of laguna with his travel buddies that took them to 13 churches in two days and visited lots of other sites Laguna has to offer.

    Laguna Visita Iglesia Route Map

    Old Churches of Laguna:

Mabitac Church: Church of Nuestra Senora de Candelaria

Due to earthquakes, only the belltower of the old church of Mabitac remains and no attempt at restoring the old church was made.

    Pakil Church

    Paete Church

    Nagcarlan Church
Pila Church: San Antonio de Padua (Church of St. Anthony de Padua)
Bay Church: San Agustin (St. Augustine Church)

Mabitac Church, Pakil Church, Paete Church, Longos Church, Lumban Church, Pagsanjan Church

Mabitac Church, Pakil Church, Paete Church, Longos Church, Lumban Church, Magdalena Church, Majayjay Church, Liliw Church, Nagcarlan Church, Pila Church, Bay Church

if you want to visit them all, nobody's against it :P

Free Wifi and Refill at Bulalo Bah Restaurant, Tanay, Rizal

One of Tutubi's favorite bulaluhan was Nita's Bulalo on Evangelista St, Bangkal, Makati where you can get free refills of steaming hot bulalo soup from waiters with takure (kettle) but Tutubi hasn't set foot on the frugal food haunt for years.

At least once a month, Tutubi comes home to his hometown Paete, Laguna via Rizal province that's why he's tried most restaurants in Rizal you can see along the national highway and Manila East Road that connects east Metro manila to the provinces of Rizal and Laguna.

One of these restaurants is quite new in the area, not actually what you call a restaurant but an eatery turo-turo style yet it has free wifi Internet and free refill of hot sabaw of their specially evident on their name: Bulalo Bah

a bowl of bulalo good for 2-3 persons price at PhP85.00, it comes with free refill of sabaw

the eatery is an unpretentious "al fresco" dining place with floor of pebbles, wooden benches and tables and with parking for two cars

Bulalo Bah's version of bulalo is more on the meaty side instead of "utak" (bone marrow) and litid (tendons) but the subtle taste of Tutubi's favorite comfort food is there.

Tutubi has been to this eatery twice already when he's looking for "fast food" at budget-friendly price. The restaurant/eatery serves at least four dishes in addition to bulalo like adobo, giniling and some bicolano cuisine e.g. kinunot na pagi (stingray in coconut milk), and laing. Budget per person is just about PhP100.00 up where you can order a bowl of bulalo, two viands, rice and a bottle of coke.

Looking for Bulalo Bah? click here for online map via OpenStreetmap (partly maintained by Tutubi) of Tanay, Rizal a few hundred meters away from Sampaloc junction and just a few meters from Kata Cafe.

Laslt this may be a simple Frugal Food Find but Bulalo Bah has an official Facebook page and Twitter account :P
    Do contact them there

    Note:
as always, this is not a sponsored post. Tutubi paid for his bills the two times he visited the place.
will also add GPS coordinates later so you won't get lost if you're direction-challenged person :P

When the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP, formerly National Historical Institute (NHI)) launched the Jose Rizal @150 Heritage Trail Project, Tutubi wasn't able to get even a Rizal passport (you need to get it at the DOT) and though he has been to most of the sites mentioned there to be visited, he didn't bother to re-visit just to get a stamp.

Rocha's Puto: Marikina Pasalubong and Specialty

As Tutubi saw featured on TV, when he was able to visit Marikina he went out of his way to search where Rocha's Special Puto and Kutsinta is located only to find out his friend exactly knew where it was.

Puto is a Filipino dessert (kakanin) of steamed rice cake where you can see several regional variants like puto manapla of Negros Occidental, puto Biñan of Laguna, Sayongsong of Surigao, puto polo of Valenzuela, and even the simple puto calasiao of Pangasinan

mouth watering puto marikina comes at a price of PhP110.00 for fifty pieces.

An office mate of Tutubi, a native of Marikina, claims Aling Remy's Original Special Puto Kutsinta is the first, original and the best (yes, another instance of the use Original so much like the The Original Buko Pie of Los Baños, Laguna and whose stall is just about 100 meters from Rocha's Puto along J.P. Rizal.

Tutubi was able to find Rocha's Puto along J.P. Rizal Street just between Marikina Shoe Museum and Our Lady of the Abandoned Parish Church. Down the road lies D'Original Aling Remy's Special Puto Kutsinta. (click here for a very detailed map of Marikina created by the cool folks of OpenStreetMap and other information how to get to Marikina)

Tutubi has yet to taste the Original Aling Remy's Special Puto Kutsinta to compare with Rocha's Puto so he cannot comment. What's known about the origins of Puto Marikina is actually the original makers were from Polo, Valenzuela which makes Puto Marikina progenies of the delicious puto polo.

    Rocha's Delicious Puto and Kutsinta
Address: 595 E Mendoza St Sto. Niño, Marikina
    Telephone Number: +63.2.914.1519

    more regional puto recipe variations:
puto manapla of Negros Occidental: simple like puto calasiao
Sayongsong of Surigao: rice cakes wrapped by conical shaped banana leaves
puto calasiao of Pangasinan that you can find along White Plains Avenue in Quezon City, on Granada St. San Juan, and Gimore Avenue also in QC.

these are very different from Puto Bumbong, Puto Seko of Laguna and even Puto Tabla in Bicol

WW2 Truth: Gen. Douglas MacArthur Left Corregidor with $500,000 from Manuel L. Quezon

Warning: if you see Gen. Douglas MacArthur as an impeccable war hero worthy of adulation, stop and leave this page. If you have an open mind, read on! :P

This day marks the 71st anniversary of the escape of Gen. Douglas MacArthur from the fortress island of Corregidor to Mindanao then finally to Melbourne, Australia.

Herewith are the historical truth that every Filipino should know behind the man mostly known for his "I Shall return" rhetoric.

December 1941: despite a few hours warning of the coming Japanese invaders from Pearl harbor, MacArthur failed to mobilize his troops and allowed the Japanese to annihilate his air force on the ground. (remember much of the "great" generals air assets were destroyed without a fight save for the heroics of Jesus Villamor, Cesar Fernando Basa et al who we now remember with airbases in the country named in their honor)

American President Roosevelt didn't send reinforcements to help Filipino and American troops holed up in Bataan for their priority was defeating Germany in Europe (see, Ph is just second to American interests during the war) together with the British and the French

During the Siege of Bataan, his media savvy brought out press releases that were able to portray himself as the American Hero of the Pacific, despite heavy losses and imminent annihilation

January 1942: MacArthur accepted $500,000.00 (half a million dollars which is a whole lot of money in 1942) from then Philippine president Manuel L. Quezon (the Philippine treasury was worth a few million dollars back then) What was the intention of Quezon for giving the money to MacArthur? Was that a bribe, a payment or just "utang na loob"

The spot on Corregidor Island where Gen. Douglas MacArthur bid his troops farewell and uttered his famous words "I Shall Return" is marked with a monument

March 11, 1942: MacArthur left Corregidor for Australia via Mindanao on board a torpedo boat

When MacArthur was already in Australia, he ordered his troops to fight till the end and even promised them help is on the way even if there's really none.

MacArthur and the US government's abandonment of dying troops in Bataan and Corregidor Island was the reason why the troops who remained fighting the Japanese in a lost cause called themselves "The Battling Bastards of Bataan" who were later captured and forced by the Japanese to participate in the infamous Bataan Death March

On October 20, 1944, MacArthur returned to the Philippines by his historic landing on Red Beach in Palo, Leyte. Did you know that MacArthur had several rehearsals just to do his wading on the beach immortalized in the Leyte Landing Memorial near Tacloban?

The US government knew about the controversial payment of Quezon to MacArthur but ignored the fact, simply because they needed a hero. MacArthur may have failed to defend the Philippines but he was very successful in portraying himself as a great tactician to the American public.

Good thing he didn't become US President, his former "secretary" in the Philippines, Dwight David Eisenhower did when he became the 34th President of the United States from 1953 until 1961.
