    Photography at the National Museum

On taking pictures inside the National Museum (photography), it has slightly improved that they now allow taking pictures inside the museum except you cannot use flash (it's understandable sine some objects on display ma be sensitive to light) and that only small cameras are allowed. Bringing in of "big" cameras i.e. SLR and DSLR require special permits from the National Museum curator. Those people are still armed with archaic ideas that DSLRs are used exclusively by professional photographers.

Ceres Liner: Bus Iloilo to Caticlan (Boracay): Fare, Route, Trip Schedules

A friend of Tutubi went to Iloilo recently on official business and went to Boracay as his "huling hirit sa tag-init." He took the Ceres bus from Iloilo to Caticlan to get to Boracay.

Tutubi is now sharing this information on how to get to Boracay from Iloilo, you have two choices: either take a GM Bus/Ceres Liner bus to Caticlan or v-hires/shuttle/vans from Iloilo to Caticlan.

Ceres Liner buses can take you to Caticlan (fare: PhP325.00) with travel time of around 6 hours with at least two stop-overs (snacks comfort breaks in usually not-so-orderly toilets). (Iloilo to Caticlan fare for ordinary buses not available and Tutubi recommends aircon buses for such long trips)

Ceres Liner earliest trip from Iloilo to Caticlan is at 430am. Return trip (earliest) Caticlan to Iloilo is at 630am.

Ceres Liner also ply the Cubao to Iloilo route that pass by Caticlan and Kalibo (contact number: +63.2.400.1208). Ceres uses the Araneta Center Bus terminal near Ali Mall in Cubao.

Ceres Liner bus station in Iloilo is in Tanza district.

Ceres Transport is the sister company plying the Manila to Batangas City route

How to get to Boracay from Bacolod? Ceres Liner Bacolod can take you directly to Caticlan or you need to take Bacolod to Iloilo ferry then an Iloilo to Caticlan bus.

Ceres Transport, Ceres Transit, Ceres Tours, Rural Tours, Bachelor Express, Rural Transit Bus are bus lines under Bacolod-based Vallacar Transit.

5 Years of Blogging, Traveling the Road Not Taken

"I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." - Robert Frost "The Road Not Taken"

Every time Nina announces her blog anniversary, it's a cue for Tutubi that his own blog anniversary is drawing near, thus this post on Tutubi's 5th year travel blogging anniversary. (Another milestone for Tutubi was his discovery of a Google PR5 (PageRank) for this blog a few months ago.)

Oh, blog anniversary, but what is the significance of Robert Frost's poem to this "momentous" occasion?

Two things: Tutubi prefers to look for places off-the-beaten path. Yes, you can see him enjoying the usual things, visiting usual places and enjoying life like most "usual" tourists do, but he goes out to explore places and discovers things under the radar of even the indolent and ignorant people of the Department of Tourism who publicly declare their "unlike" of backpackers.

Second, is what makes Tutubi unique from other bloggers, not just travel bloggers: He took the road not taken i.e. he made it a point _NOT_ to give in to advertorials, sponsored posts, freebies including free trips. He has turned down offers from several firms and hotels' free accommodations so that he can proudly proclaim his comments and reviews come with no strings attached.

He earns a quite respectable passive income from this blog (especially during summer), though not enough to replace his day job with his salary, perks and travel opportunities that fuel this blog. He has saved his earnings enough to defray the costs of even a European tour and a long-wanted trip to Japan combined.

But those two expensive backpacking tours may wait as priorities in life need to be, well, prioritized!

For now, this blog is now part of Tutubi's assets that he hopes to someday bequeath to his "Mini-Me," the main reason why he turned down an earlier offer from a foreign-based company to buy this blog.

    I explore, there I blog!

    No quid pro quo.

Five years, to infinity and beyond! :P

Philtranco, Superlines, Amihan, Daet Express: Bus to Daet, Camarines Norte

Tutubi has a very close friend from Daet that's why he's been to the capital town of Camarines Norte where he visited Bagasbas Beach, the first Jose Rizal Monument and also facilitated his explorations to the nearby towns of Mercedes and the paradise islands of Apuao Grande Island (Mercedes) and Calaguas Island (of Vinzons town)

Talagang Dalaga Resort in Paete, Laguna

With an initial intention to visit either 818 Resort in Pagsanjan or Piit Resort (now Paguil River Eco-park in Pangil town), the trip was almost cancelled due to unpredictable coming of heavy rain but pushed through not at the mentioned resorts but the one of nearest resorts to Tutubi-- Talagang Dalaga, a mountainside resort with water supplied by the aquifers of the Sierra Madre mountain.

talagang dalaga resort paete lagunathe entrance of the resort with a damsel not in distress

Tutubi was surprised at the development of the resort, he visited it many years ago and it was just a simple pool, much like Pakil's Turumba Public Swimming Pool that he used to swim at then hitch a ride in jeepneys, sabit-style, due to his still dripping wet clothes.

1 of the resort's three swimming pools. deepest at 6 feet. No other people there since it rained (yeah, it always rains in Paete, called "pusali ng langit" by locals, due to the tropical rainforest sub-climate, according to PAGASA)

the highest of the 3 waterfalls. from this level you can already get a view of Laguna de Bay

Talagang Dalaga is now a full-blown resort, not just a swimming pool with mountain rocks (quite similar to the now "extinct" Black Hawk of Paete) but without the expensive restaurant due to its small town feel. you can bring in food to eat with your family, no corkage fees.

A Preview of the Jungle Trek/Monkey Trail, Sabang, Palawan

"The monkey trail is named after the monkey (macaca fascicularis) that are often seen in the karst. The trail consists of a total of 355 wooden steps and 386 hardened and paved steps. In 15 days, 100 men built the steps, starting from the top and working their way down be segment. The original jungle trail was made of timber salvaged from the park. Hence, it was easier to start at the top and bring the logs down rather than haul them uphill." said the billboard displayed at the entrance of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park in Palawan.

monkey trail palawan underground rivermonkey trail pointed to Tutubi by a park staff when asked for directions

After the touristy boat ride tour of Palawan Underground River, Tutubi took a sneak preview of the Monkey trail/Jungle Trek adventure near the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River Park restrooms where he was greeted with monkeys (tsonggo) and monitor lizards (bayawak)

palawan jungle trek sabangthe trail where you can see the end of the wooden steps of the 5.3 kilometer jungle trail. Photo taken around 11am thus the contrast

What can you see on the monkey trail? Monkeys, the only species of monkeys in the Philippines locally known as tsonggo and bayawak (monitor lizards) roaming around. Expect also pythons, plants and animals better left in the wild rather than caged in zoos.

    monkey long-tailed macaque

    monkey long-tailed macaque

    bayawak monitor lizard

Note when you see wildlife, don't feed them as it alters their eating habits and endears them to humans making them less wild and lowers survival instincts.

This jungle trail in Palawan reminded Tutubi of the beautifully preserved Blue Mountain National Park in Australia that he was able to visit (and yet forgot to post on this blog), where you can see endemic species of flora and fauna and where trees and plants have signs with common names, scientific names and their important role in the ecosystems, including swamps that appear ordinary and must-avoid but actually goldmine for scientists.

    ---

Information on the Jungle Trek/Monkey Trail to the Palawan Underground River:

    Monkey trail closing time:

    12nn Sabang
    1pm Central Park
3pm Underground River (near the cave entrance)

as you need to start early, suggest you go to Sabang the day before you intend to do the trek then spend night at some accommodations on Sabang Beach.

    Map of Monkey Trail:

It's present on OpenStreetMap, you can browse it online and/or use a GPS navigator to track your location.

    What to bring:
Entry permit (from the Tourist Information Office in Sabang)
    insect repellant

Please also carry all your trash back with you to Sabang for proper disposal and not litter the trail (if not, you're one of the "backpackers" DOT Sec. Alberto Lim who "leaves waste" giving good backpackers a bad name).

Tutubi would love to re-visit Palawan someday, one of his favorite destinations, and intends to do this monkey trail next time around.

All-You-Can-Eat Buffet at Robert's Restaurant, Sabang Beach, Palawan

Just for your information on where to eat in Sabang, Palawan, Robert's Restaurant and Rooms on Sabang Beach offers all-you-ca-eat buffet for weary visitors to Palawan Underground River.

Tutubi and friends found the offer on the beachfront ok with several Filipino dishes offered against ordering on the menu ala carte which takes time and more expensive than the already available lunch buffet meal at a price of PhP200.00.

there originally was one buffet table with a long queue of hungry tourists, including foreigners but another table was put up to accommodate other people including Tutubi's group.

served on the buffet table was rice all you can, binagol soup (recipe much like chicken tinola but using coconut water instead of water), three native dishes inlcuding grilled liempo, chicken adobo (better than the usual adobo, with the right contrast of salty, sour and spicy tastes), cucumber salad, bananas and a bottle of soda.

With lunch set on the beachfront of Sabang and only for PhP200.00, it's already a good deal for a touristy place.

Batangas Express CNG Bus Fares Promo to Batangas City

An officemate of Tutubi who regularly commutes to Tanauan, Batangas from Makati tipped him off about the promo fare of Batangas Express, one of several bus lines to Batangas (some via the Calabarzon i.e. Startoll) e.g. JAM Liner, RRCG, Ceres Transport and JAC Liner in addition to colorum shuttle vans/fx to batangas in Pasay City.

Bus fare to Tanauan, Batangas is currently PhP96.00 but the promo fare is just PhP58.00 (PhP55.00 fare to Sto. Tomas). This is not what regular commuters call "regular" fare referring to discounts given to loyal customers of bus companies. No information on the end date of the promo fare offering.

How can Batangas Express offer such low bus fares? It's due to their use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to power their buses, with re-fueling stations in between. It's cheaper than diesel and gasoline powering ordinary trucks and buses (ordinary meaning common, not the no air-conditioned buses called ordinary colloquially).

No information yet on the current bus fare to Batangas City but it's around PhP200.00. This is good information for those going to Batangas Port to get to Puerto Galera via ferry/boat ride.

Batangas Express bus terminal is on Taft Avenue near corner Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue (formerly Buendia) in Pasay City and walking distance from LRT Buendia station. It's between the bus station of JAM Transit and Green Star Express. It's main route is, what else, Batangas City.

Information on Batangas Express Telephone Number not yet available. Just contact them directly for other inquiries like current fares, chartered bus rates, freight/waybill charges and trip schedules.

Tutubi, as always, is not in any way affiliated with Batangas Express nor did he receive anything, in cash or in kind, from Batangas Express for this post.

Davao: Pearl Farm Beach Resort Day Tour

With Pearl Farm Beach resort's famous Parola already reaching iconic status identified with Davao City, a recent visit by Tutubi to the peaceful and most liveable city of Mindanao, his third actually, was accentuated by an unplanned side trip and day tour of Pearl Farm Beach Resort actually located on the Island Garden City of Samal.

Tutubi initially intended to visit Davao Ethnic Museum during the last day of his 2D/1N Davao trip but his companions insisted to do a day tour of the former pearl farm turned resort to which he obliged even if he did not want to at first.

Photos of Pearl Farm Beach Resort:

davao pearl farm resorton the wharf of Pearl Farm resort, popularly called Parola, with the houses on stilts on the background.

the six Samal Houses of Pearl farm resort with azure skies as backdrop. wasn't able to see interiors of the houses though

the beach near the houses on stilts and Mandaya houses are not as good as the one near the wharf. it's full of pebbles and may hurt your feet if you intend to swim

infinity poolPearl Farm's infinity pool beckons if not to the searing summer heat of the mid-day sun guaranteed to tan your skin (that Caucasians covet yet avoided like hell by most brown-skinned Filipinos

an enviable father and son enjoying the beach with the two-year old boy diving to his father's waiting arms on one of Pearl Farm's swimming pools.

    pearl farm beach resort davao
it would've been a romantic dinner on the beach front at Pearl farm if only time permits and with the right companion...may be next time

(Honest) Comments and Review of Pearl Farm Beach Resort:

at a price of PhP1500.00/head comes inclusive of welcome drinks and buffet lunch (showcasing davao's dishes and exotic fruits. Tutubi had a blast with lots of pomelo fruits and watermelons but didn't see durian)

service was nice, staff courteous, complimentary use of lockers, beach towels nad boat trips to Malipano Island but no free use of snorkeling gears and at laest trips to snorkeling sites or dive spots.

beach: the only recommended white sand beach is the one near Parola wharf, not the one near Mandaya houses, and those two beaches on Malipano Island.

Swimming pools: as mentioned and posted on pictures above, the infinity pool and swimming pool (near Mandaya Houses). Note that shower rooms for day tourists are available only near the Mandaya houses and really limited. You may get in long queue just to change if you're not checked in.

Price: Resort room rates for overnight accommodations are not for budget travelers like Tutubi. The mentioned day trip price of PhP1500.00 also comes with the round-trip boat transfers from Davao City wharf marina to Pearl Farm Resort. There's no such thing as cheap package tours to Pearl Farm Beach Resort even if you just intend to stay there 2D/1N or 3D/2N.

Facilities: nice but beyond the usual activities (swimming, billiards, sleeping, playpen for kids/toddlers) are wanting except if you're with a special someone like a romantic honeymoon, the place almost doesn't matter :P

Souvenir items are available at Butik (boutique) where you can buy souvenir t-shirts at PhP280.00 each, flip-flops (havaianas at PhP800.00 and el cheapo beach sandals at PhP80.00) and other usual items.

Overnight Accommodations: the cheapest rates are available at the Hilltop houses, quite a trek or a ride on electric golf carts. Tutubi wasn't able to see the interiors but from the outside the place needs upgrading. The best rooms are on Malipano Island. Probably the most cost-effective room are the houses on stilts.

    ---
Pearl Farm Beach Resort Dday Tour Rate: PhP1,500.00/person (yeah, cheaper that the day tour rate of Dos Palmas Island Resort posted earlier.
Please contact Pearl Farm Beach resort's contact number or make your bookings through authorized travel agents. you can try a walk-in tour or pearl farm but it depends on boat availability. get in touch directly for group tours, resort promos, peak and off-peak rates, massage spa rates et al.

How to get to Pearl Farm Beach Resort:
Book your day tour by calling their hotline then show up at the Pearl Farm Marina, just 15 minutes travel time from Davao International Airport via taxi then another 45 minutes boat ride to the resort on Samal Island.

Coming soon: Malipano Island, Tutubi's first Cebu Pacific Delayed Flight experience and the story of Tutubi's havaianas :P

How to Get to Obando, Bulacan: Map, Commute, Directions

For married couples wishing to have a child or curious tourists who want to witness Catholic faithful dance to the beat of "Santa Clarang Pinung-pino," here's how you can get to the Bulacan town with three patron saints celebrating fiesta on May 17-19.

How to Get to Obando, Bulacan:

    Commute to Obando, Bulacan:

The fastest way to get there from anywhere in Metro Manila is via the LRT Monumento station where jeepneys to Obando, Bulacan waiting at the jeepney terminal at the back of Puregold Monumento and Victory Mall. Jeepney fare is around PhP25.00

    Driving directions to Obando, Bulacan:

from Manila, the easiest (not the fastest) is via Rizal Avenue (avenida) and from anywhere else is via EDSA (again, not the best route as there are always shortcuts) to get to Monumento then take the Samson road exit at the busy roundabout (from EDSA, it's the second exit, first is MacArthur Highway, second is Samson Road and third is Rizal Avenue.). Drive along Samson road, pass UE Caloocan campus then turn right at Sangandaan Market to M.H. Del Pilar (other landmarks: Mercury Drug to your left and Shell and Caltex gas stations at the other corners). COntinue on M.H. Del Pilar until you reach Panghulo where you choose Panghulo road (the left road on the fork after the Shell gas station after crossing Tinajeros Bridge) going to Obando Church (San Pascual de Baylon Parish Church) if you continue along M.H Del Pilar you'll reach Arkong Bato and Polo Church, part of Valenzuela City.

If you're coming from the north via MacArthur Highway or NLEX, the nearest town is Meycauayan, Bulacan.

St. Pascual de Baylon Parish Church (Obando Church)
    J.P. Rizal St., Obando Bulacan
    Coordinates: 14°42'38"N 120°56'13"E

Obando Fertility Dance Fiesta Warning: streets around Obando Church are closed to vehicles to give way for the famous "Fertility Dance" fista during the Obando fiesta from May 17 to 19.

Duo's Chef Mau Restaurant in Liliw, Laguna

One of Tutubi's favorite restaurant in the small town of Liliw, Laguna famous for shoes and tsinelas (and where the annual Tsinelas Festival is held annually on Gat Tayaw St), a nice restaurant owned by a brother of the owner of Duo Steakhouse and Wine Bar at Serendra Piazza, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Here you can enjoy steaks at prices unbelievably lower than it's more elegant relative at The Fort.

Chef Mau Mobile fastfood, as it delivers food on wheels to Liliw town center (it being quite far from where the action is), was visited several times by Tutubi with his parents in tow just to eat out, about 40 minutes drive from Paete, Laguna via Pagsanjan, who finds the quaint house turned into a restaurant with very limited seating capacity.

Homey interiors and ambiance but with limited space for just 3 big tables plus two small ones for a total seating capacity of 20 (roughly), the dishes on the menu are a combination of pinoy all time favorites, fusion and steaks.

    Sample Menu and Recommended Dishes:

a big bowl of steaming hot bulalo for only P180.00 (about half the price from other restaurants)

Tutubi's favorite Thai-style tilapia, st. peter's fish fried with salty, sweet, sour and spicy sauce, signature thai...quite easy to dupiclate recipe :P
spicy laing, not really spicy but mellowed down but yet still a recommended dish
    pork lechon, chef mau style
fiddlehead fern salad (ensaladang paco), not too fresh when served as it's nightime already. Tutubi knows these ferns, bought cheap in Laguna and Quezon, don't stay fresh more than a day. better order them in the morning. Tutubi just loves Chef Mau's salad dressing accentuated by the itlog na maalat (salted egg) slice

Sample Menu prices of Chef Mau Restaurant:

    Thai Tilapia: PhP100.00
Special Bulalo: PhP180.00 (serves 3-4 people)
    Paco Salad: PhP50.00
    Spicy Laing: PhP60
    Steamed Banana Heart: PhP60.00
    Pancit Lechon: PhP95.00
Beef Steak Tagalog (bistek tagalog): PhP180
    Plain Rice: PhP12.00
softdrinks in cans and juices at PhP30.00/each
Coke 1.5L: PhP45.00 (almost same as sari-sari store price)

And now Tutubi has given you one of his secret favorite restaurants, something he does not regularly post in this blog due to lack of time. It's a combination of good food, ambiance and low price that makes him go back to the place. Chef Mau is a certified frugal food find in this part of Laguna :P

    Chef Mau Mobile Fastfood

last remarks: please call chef mau restaurant contact number for your inquiries. As always, Tutubi is not affiliated with the establishment nor did he receive anything for this post.

Boracay: Caticlan Airport Terminal Fee Hike in 2014

If you're a budget traveler wishing to visit at least once the famous white sand beach of Boracay you'll be paying two airport terminals to get there and out and they cost PhP220.00 at most if you're coming from the country's main airports (NAIA, Cebu, Davao) and less if you're from minor airports with cheaper airport terminal fees.

Recently, the diversifying corporate giant San Miguel Corporation, through Trans Aire Development Holdings Corp. (TAHDC), now holds the 25-year contract to rehabilitate and operate the Caticlan airport.

The Caticlan Airport terminal will be upgraded and it's runway, currently only able to accommodate propeller planes (of Cebu Pacific, Seair, ZestAir et al) will also be extended to make way for large jet airplanes including direct international flights. With these present and future improvements come at a stiff price that tourists coming to Boracay will have to pay...in 2014 that is.

How much is Caticlan Airport terminal fee now?

It's still PhP20.00, cheap and easy on the pocket.
In January 2012, it will increase to PhP200
in 2014, it will be increased to PhP500.00

the same airport tax of NAIA in manila and Mactan-Cebu International Airport but for international flights only, domestic flight passengers are still taxed PhP200.00

Tutubi's advice? Come to Boracay now then go elsewhere in 2014 to spend your hard-earned money to explore other places this country has lots of besides the crowded beach of Boracay. At least you've been there!

How to Get to Lucban, Quezon: Map Commute Directions (+ Pahiyas Fiesta Tips)

The most colorful fiesta in the merry month of May can be found in the town of Lucban, Quezon Province's Pahiyas Fiesta. If you're looking for information on "how to get to Lucban, Quezon" you've found the right page where you can get the most complete directions in getting there from various parts of Ph.

First, an interactive map of Lucban, Quezon can be found on OpenStreetMap that can be downloaded into your GPS device for free. This is more accurate than other online maps out there.

    Driving Directions to Lucban, Quezon:

From Quezon City via Rizal Province: best route going to Lucban is to head to Marcos Highway in Marikina all the way to Sumulong highway where you turn right (landmark: masinag market to your left). Drive all the way to Sumulong Circle where you turn left, then go around the rotunda to turn right to provincial highway going to the Rizal towns of Teresa, Morong, Baras, Tanay, Pililla, then the Laguna towns of Mabitac, Famy/Siniloan, Pangil, Pakil, Paete, Kalayaan, Lumban, Pagsanjan where you go past Pagsanjan Municipal Hall and Pagsanjan Church (not turn right for it goes to Sta. Cruz) then turn left going to Cavinti, Luisiana then finally Lucban, Quezon. Travel via this route is about 3 hours, scenic route and without expensive toll fees.

Another route, a shortcut but most of the time is slower is via Ortigas Avenue up to Tikling junction, Sumulong Circle in Antipolo then follow the same route described above.

If you're from SLEx, just take Calamba Exit then pass by the towns of Los Banos up to Pagsanjan where you turn right then left to Cavinti, Luisiana then Lucban. There's also the Calauan, Nagcarlan, Liliw, Majayjay route to Lucban for you to choose from, less tricycles than the Sta. Cruz route.

If you're going there for the Pahiyas Fiesta on May 15 (annual lucban town fiesta), you will not be able to enter the town proper and will have to park your vehicle on the road side then walk or ride a tricycle to get to Lucban town proper (poblacion) or to San Isidro Labrador Church.

How to commute to Lucban, Quezon:

From Rizal Province, you can ride the Siniloan-bound jeepney in Tanay then transfer to an AH Transportation bus at the junction near Famy and Siniloan. AH Transportation buses pass by Laguna towns of Siniloan, Famy, Pangil, Pakil, Paete, Kalayaan, Lumban, Pagnsanjan, Cavinti and Luisiana before reaching Lucban, Quezon

From Manila or Cubao, try Raymond Transportation bus, alight in Famy, Laguna then transfer to an AH Transportation bus to Lucena City that pass by Lucban.

From Cubao Quezon City, and in Pasay City (either Taft Avenue corner Buendia or at Pasay Rotonda), you can ride buses to Lucena City. At Lucena Central Transport Terminal, transfer to a jeepney or bus going to Lucban (even those going to Sta. Cruz, Laguna).

    Pahiyas Fiesta Tips:
not the whole town of Lucban's houses are decorated with colorful kiping, Tutubi was told there's a certain rotation or designated street/blocks that are required to decorate and not the entire town. Some homes may decorate as desired.

Overnight accommodations are available at Batis Aramin Resort and a lone hotel/inn in Lucban town plaza that are usually booked months ahead of Pahiyas. Nearby Tayabas has inns too also nearby Pagsanjan resorts and hotels can offer alternative overnight accommodations
