New Mactan Cebu Airport Terminal Fee

The new Mactan Cebu International airport is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project under Pnoy completed by Megawide (GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation (GMCAC)). As with all partnerships and improvements, there is a corresponding price to be paid for new amenities and resort-like ambiance for the private company to recoup their investment
Note that in other countries, the terminal fee/departure tax is included in the airline tickets but not in the Philippines due to exemptions to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) that's why you need to pay separate fees for terminal fee and travel tax (PhP1,620.00 for international economy class airline tickets)

PhP200.00 domestic flights
note that is to be paid at the airport in cash so bring your last peso with you at the airport for this one if you're flying out of the country.

Butanding/Tuki in Oslob, Cebu (Whale Sharks Should be Left Alone)

Over the holiday break, there have been reported sightings of whale sharks in Oslob, Cebu, or tuki as called by locals. These gentle giants are called Butanding in Donsol, Sorsogon that turned the sleepy town at the mouth of Donsol River into an eco-tourism attraction famous around the world.
This same attraction can be achieved by Oslob, Cebu, being nearer to the tourists of Cebu City but one disturbing news caught Tutubi's eye-- that the fishermen of Oslob town turned tuki-watching guides are feeding the tuki (butanding) with small shrimps.
Feeding whale sharks may be "more fun" but what they're doing is NOT right!
Such activity is uncalled for and with disastrous results, not now but in the future, where the tukis may become tamed or domesticated thus altering their natural behavior.
Oslob should learn how to deal with tukis in their town by setting up rules in tuki interaction, similar to what Donsol Butanding Interaction rules that simply state:
1. Do not attempt to touch, ride, or chase a whale shark.
2. Do not restrict normal movement or behavior of the shark.
3. Maintain a minimum distance of 3 meters from the whale shark and at least 4 meters from its tail.
4. Do not undertake flash photography.
5. Do not use underwater motorized diver propulsions.

Oslob should try to put in place organized tuki sightseeing tours and avoid ganging up on sighted tukis, note in Donsol only one boat is allowed to interact with butanding. Ganging up on a whale shark may stress out the tuki.

How to Get to Mactan-Cebu Airport:Terminal Fee, Taxi/Multicab/Jeepney

Formally known as Mactan-Cebu International Airport, is the airport destination of Tutubi about 10 years ago and has since become his most visited place outside Luzon.
Herewith is a Guide to Mactan Cebu International Airport based on accumulated "wisdom" of Tutubi, thus these tips and other information for the traveller.
For newcomers to Cebu City, herewith is map of Mactan-Cebu International Airport (browseable map by OpenStreetMap
Flights to Cebu Airport:
Cebu City is the second largest and busiest airport in the Philippines, there are many direct flights to most domestic destinations plus several international flights.
How to get out of Mactan Cebu Airport:
Coupon taxis are available at the arrival area gates with fixed taxi fare listed on a fare matrix. Yellow metered taxis are also available with PhP70.00 flagdown rate to any destination in Cebu.
Metered taxis can be flagged down by arriving passengers at the departure area. To get regular taxis, cross the street from the arrival area gate. A little to your right is a short stairway that leads to the departure area where metered taxis drop off departing passengers.
Travel time from cebu Airport to Cebu City center and downtown area is just around 30 minutes, taxi fare is around PhP200.00 to PhP300.00. Taxi drivers here are less notorious than the taxi drivers of Metro Manila.
Restaurants, Eateries, Coffee shops and duty-free shopping:
At the domestic departure area there's only one restaurant/eatery serving full rice meals (Cafe Wien) but it closes at 7pm (Tutubi learned this the hard way). For snacks, there's Fruit Magic (with teeny-weeny sandwich and pasta), Dunkin Donuts, and Coffee dream and several snack counters and pasalubong stores. Duty free shops at the international departure area.
How to get to Mactan Cebu International Airport:
Wishing to commute to Cebu Airport rather than take a cab? at the City center take multicabs going to Opon then drop of at Marina Mall. At Marina Mall look for with yellow multicabs with signboard Lapu-lapu City to Airport (LLC-PUBMARKET-MCIAA-VV).
From Mactan Cebu International Airport to the City by Public Transportation:
At the arrival area, walk towards Airport Terminal road and look for the same yellow multicabs going to marina Mall then transfer to another multicab to your destination (e.g. SM Cebu, Ayala Center, Mandaue et al).
From Cebu City onwards, suggest you go to SM City Cebu then ride jeepneys, multicabs or vhires (vans/fx) as it's a public transporation hub with lots of terminals. You can also proceed to Cebu North Bus Terminal (e.g. for bus trips to Bogo, Bantayan Island or Malapascua Island) or Cebu South Bus Terminal (e.g. Moalboal) to catch buses to your destination.
From Cebu Aiport to Moalboal (South of Cebu City)
From the aiport, ride the multicab to Marina Mall, transfer to a multicab going to Mandaue. In Mandaue, ride the jeep to One Citilink. At One Citilink, take vans going to Moalboal.

Jose Rizal@150 Heritage Trail Project (Lakbay Jose Rizal by DOT and NHCP)

A project of the Department of Tourism and the national Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP, formerly the National Historical Institute (NHI)) in celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the country's national hero, Rizal @ 150 Heritage Trail Project (Lakbay Jose Rizal) requires "amazing race" participants to secure Lakbay Rizal passport, visit all 27 places Jose Rizal visited and have "visas" stamped on the Rizal@150 passport. The first 100 people to complete the list of 27 sites shall receive a token from the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Herewith is the list of places Jose Rizal visited required you too visit to complete the Lakbay Rizal heritage trail. Note that Tutubi has been to all Rizal Shrines except 4 on the list. If only there's crediting of previous visits to the various Jose Rizal Shrines, Tutubi would have almost completed the list by now :(

WARNING: If you have an SLR/DSLR, be prepared to be harassed by the "Guardia Civil" of the Intramuros Administration (IA) who still have the medieval thinking that SLR cameras are for professional photographers only thus require you apply for a "permit to shoot" for a fee. A tourist spot promoted by the DOT and yet you can't take a souvenir picture with an SLR to share with friends for the world to "like." The rule is applied inconsitently where Tutubi was harrased by security guards for taking pictures of Manila Catheral and yet left a foreign tourist alone taking photos of the same Intramuros landmark. Such is the shame here, Jose Rizal would have cried out loud for such archaic and discriminatory practice against the indios of today.
The NHCP, however, through the forward mindset of Prof. Ambeth Ocampo, now allow photography at their shrines, thus the various pictures of Rizal Shrines on this post.

Everybody knows Rizal didn't get straight "sobresaliente" grades here in Medical school, one subject even had a passing grade

photo of Rizal's house in Dapitan (yeah, NHI chairman Ambeth Ocampo should be informed that those NHI markers obstruct the view). The woman in white, not a nun but a member of a Rizalist sect worshiping Rizal as a God doing, does volunteer work in maintaining the shrine.
A pool of water that comprise Jose Rizal's aqueduct that supplied potable water to Dapitan, a feat of water works engineering well ahead of his time according to modern day enngineers
21. Dapitan Plaza, Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte

The historical marker reads: "This is the site of the Casa Real, official residence and administration building of the politico-military governor of the district. Here, Jose Rizal lived as an exile from July 17, 1892 to March 1893 when he was transferred to Talisay, now the Rizal Dapitan Shrine."

Of all the 27 sites, this may be the hardest one to reach. Katipunan town is south of Dapitan and Dipolog, the twin cities of Zamboanga del Norte. No information yet on the interwebs on how to get there or how it actually looks like
Lastly, did you know that Tutubi was able to visit two sites related to Jose Rizal in Hong Kong, the first one's the site of clinic (on D'Aguilar Street) and the second one's his home where he stayed on Rednaxela Terrace (the long escalator).
Probably next year, he'll also explore the places Jose Rizal visited in Singapore.

Of all the 27 sites, this may be the hardest one to reach. Katipunan town is south of Dapitan and Dipolog, the twin cities of Zamboanga del Norte. No information yet on the interwebs on how to get there or how it actually looks like
Lastly, did you know that Tutubi was able to visit two sites related to Jose Rizal in Hong Kong, the first one's the site of clinic (on D'Aguilar Street) and the second one's his home where he stayed on Rednaxela Terrace (the long escalator).
Probably next year, he'll also explore the places Jose Rizal visited in Singapore.

Cebu's Abuhan Pochero: Kalami Gyud!

One of recommended restaurants in Cebu City visited again by Tutubi to partake of the famous pochero, Cebu's version of the Tagalog's bulalo, a soup made of beef and one of Tutubi's favorite comfort food.
the homey ambiance of the Abuhan Dos on Ramos St. near Fuente Osmena downtown Cebu City.
The pochero (price: P350.00) came in one big bowl with one order good for 2 to 4 persons, still steaming hot, the way it should always be.
What makes Cebu's pochero distinct from Batangas Bulalo? It's the presence of white corn!

Cebu: Mactan Shrine, Lapu-lapu Monument and Myths about Ferdinand Magellan

A return visit to the historic site of the battle between the natives led by Lapu-lapu and the Portuguese explorer in the service of Spain Ferdinand Magellan where Magellan met his death, mostly due to his ineptness as a general.
Tutubi again visited the place on the request of his peer who wanted to see the famous site of the "battle of mactan".
Ferdinand Magellan’s Monument
A coral stone obelisk Erected in 1866 in honor of Hernando de Magallanes). It bears the words “Glorias Españolas (Glory to Spain)."
The Lapu-lapu Monument, made of bronze, at dusk...

the Mactan Shrine mural and historical marker. The Battle of Mactan mural wrongly depict Lapu-lapu in combat with Magellan. The marker states "Here, on 27 April 1521 Lapulapu and his men repulsed the Spanish invaders, killing their leader ferdinand Magellan thus Lapulapu became the first Filipino to have repelled European aggresion."
How did Ferdinand Magellan die? So many historical myths and hoaxes abound here but it's not really Lapu-lapu who killed him but a poisoned arrow to the leg. It was probably Lapu-lapu who dealt the final blow. He was killed due to his "stupidity" to charge at an enemy he didn't have any information on (remember Sun Tzu's Art of War?), and on the prodding of Rajah Humabon, an enemy of Lapu-lapu.
Rajah Humabon, who converted to Christianity earlier, later poisoned his Christian friends. What was left of Magellan's expedition later circumnavigated the world.

Mactan Shrine entrance fees: None but a donation box can be seen at the shrine entrance gate. Parking fee is at P10/vehicle.
There's also a Lapu-lapu Monument at Rizal Park in Manila (Luneta) "watching" the back of Jose Rizal Monument
How to get to Mactan Shrine / Lapu-lapu Monument, Lapu-lapu City:
Commuting from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, you can flag a taxi to take you there directly or a jeepney, popularly called multicab, with signboard Punta Engaño. Tutubi also observed jeepneys with So-ong Maribago signboards passed by the place from Mandaue Highway. The Shrine is near Shangri-la Mactan Resort and Spa and the the famous Sutukil seafood restaurants. No information on jeepney fares but the taxi fare may be about P250 from downtown Cebu City.
Directions to Mactan shrine? It's just a straight drive from Mandaue City via Marcelo Fernan Bridge then right to M.L. Quezon Highway all the way to the shrine.

Sky Adventure: Skywalk Extreme and Edge Coaster at Crown Regency Hotel, Cebu City

First seen by Tutubi on TV with Diane Castillejo and Marc Nelson trying out the Philippines' first Skywalk Extreme on Studio 23 show Sports Unlimited on top of Crown Regency Hotel and Towers in Cebu City's Fuente Osmena, the adventure tourism facility was tried out by Tutubi recently after months of "planning" that eventually materialized along with two of his peers who were able to synchronize their hectic work schedules just to go there together.
After a tireful day working followed by a hearty dinner at Conching's Native Chicken and Fastfood near SM City Cebu, Tutubi and his peers hied off to Crown Regency Hotel to unwind and check out the adventure place they only used to see on tv.

the souvenir photo counter where you can have your pictures printed/saved to CD and to claim your certificates of surviving the skywalk
the turnstile area of the facility, the farthest your camera can go before you store them in your free lockers
Cameras are not allowed while you're doing the SKywalk or Edge Coaster ride, like similar touristy places, they ban cameras not just for safety but for...you know why...and have official photographers, with pathetic photography skills, to take your pictures that you can buy for PhP200 per print or P750 for everything stored in a CD.
The Edge Coaster Ride is a ride around the edge of Crown Regency Hotel and Towers where you can see the panoramic view of Cebu City, day or night, with the full view of the city below you-- not for people afraid of heights!

The Skywalk Extreme lets you walk around a platform circling the building about 6 feet wide, made of glass so you can see objects below, while you're attached to safety harnesses. A photographer takes your pictures around several scripted poses.
Skywalk Extreme: a pretty thrill-seeker holding on to dear life while striking a pose with Cebu nightscape as a backdrop.
What's so funny was that that Tutubi met two friends from the Mentor group who manages their company's team-building programs but were unaware that there's such a facility at Crown Regency Hotel and Towers that they didn't know even if they were at the hotel the night before.
Tutubi merely narrated a long list of adventure places in the country but cannot divulge his identity to be the author of this travel blog...so much for the primacy of privacy over publicity :(

Leaving Cebu: Crossing Marcelo Fernan Bridge

Just a last picture of Cebu taken inside the van taking Tutubi to Mactan Cebu International Airport while about to cross the amazing cable-stayed bridge named after a prominent politician.
Marcelo Fernan Bridge is one of the two bridges crossing Mactan Channel separating Cebu Island from Mactan Island; the other is the older Mactan-Mandaue bridge.
Note that the dark clouds on the horizon were brought by typhoon Frank which was battering Manila at the time Tutubi was about to return there. It'sa good thing his return flight via Philippine Airlines was not canceled when all morning flights of Cebu Pacific Airlines and those of other carriers like Seair and Asian Spirit, using smaller planes were canceled.
Tutubi will be back in Cebu, that's for sure!

"Shoot to Kill" in Cebu

After the disappointing first dinner at The Port, Tutubi and his officemates asked around for other places to eat near Waterfront and people pointed them to a branch of Neo-Neo which was really near the place.Neo-Neo restaurant is similarly themed with the popular SUTUKIL restaurants, more like carinderia eateries, in Mactan Island particularly those near the Lapu-lapu Shrine. Customers can choose raw ingredients of isda (fish), tulya (clams), pusit (squid), talaba (oysters) and others while choosing the way they're cooked.
Neo-neo, looking at their menu, is also offering Japanese and Singaporean food to serve the number of tourists from Japan and Singapore frequenting the place.

The pop word sutukil or (SU-TU-KIL) is a humorous (sounds like "shoot to kill") portmanteau of three Cebuano words: sugba, tuwa, kilaw -- which refer to the three ways of preparing food, particularly seafood like fish. Sugba means to broil over hot charcoal; tuwa means to cook in boiling water together with some spices and seasoning; kilaw means to prepare raw but soaked in vinegar with spices e.g. onions, garlic and pepper quite similar to ceviche of South America using citrus-based marinate and Japan's sashimi (served totally raw but using dipping sauce of soy sauce and wasabi).
Similarly themed restaurants in Cebu are Goodah-Gud and Tsibogs. Neo-Neo has branches on Juan Luna Avenue in Cebu City, Fortuna Street in Mandaue City and Lapulapu City.
The only comment Tutubi has on this restaurant was the slow serving of his fresh buko juice order. Ambiance is typical al fresco but there's also an air-conditioned room but was reserved for the night by a certain group. Tutubi particularly loved the lato kinilaw. This is a recommended restaurant besides Golden Cowrie offering much better choices than the pretentious The Port Seafood Restaurant.

On Cebu's Sex Tourism
"Boss, chicks," a man, with a wry smile, called the attention of Tutubi while walking early evening near Fuente Osmena in Cebu. It was Tutubi's first time in the city and encountered pimps at least twice during his stay. It was the same Cebu he encountered in his second and third sojourns in the big city.
The fourth time, on his second night in Cebu, his officemates wanted to visit a karaoke bar at the lower ground floor of Waterfront Hotel called Club Nyx KTV and Bar. Three of his senior companions entered the bar while Tutubi and his friends were taking pictures of the hotel's facade. When Tutubi and his friends looked for their companions who went ahead, the guard of Club Nyx asked them if they're from the media possibly due to the DSLR camera strung on his shoulder. They were able to enter and locate their "missing" peers, later emptied San Mig Light and belted quite a number of songs when an un-ordered parade of girls entered the room together with an older woman, who later identified herself as the Mama-san, who narrated she used to work at a certain Lighthouse on Timog in Quezon City when she was poached by the Korean owner of Club Nyx.
On the offer to get a girl to accompany them, even to "take out," the group plainly said "thanks, but no thanks" to the offer and the girls left the room. Letting even one of those girls in small chat requires ordering expensive ladies drinks at regular intervals and for "take out" would have to cough up bar fines, sometimes called "leaving fines," according to a patron of such places (who knows even the prices of various bars he frequents), are the payment a customer pays the bar owners for "taking out" their employees, euphemistically called GROs, short for guest relations officers.

Cebu tourism is also a booming industry but the dark side of this is highly evident with a booming flesh trade with the mushrooming of girlie bars masquerading as KTV, clubs, bars (sans the long table), GROs moonlighting as prostitutes and even streetwalkers looking for quick cash. This was confirmed by this report by Cebu Daily News recently.
Even the lone Cebu Tourism channel TV banners rotating ads of Club Temptation, Club Mermaid in Lapu-lapu City, Club Tokyo with interludes of advertisements of Ocean Bay Beach Resort while free travel guide on Cebu at the exit of Mactan-Cebu International airport advertises Grand Stage Bikini Bar, Tarzan Gay Bar, Club Circus, Cities, Club H20, Nasa, Club Jaguar Bar & KTV, International Bar Complex, Love City Bar & KTV, Gold Finger Bar & KTV, Cocoloco, Golden Calesa Club Circuit KTV, Infinity KTV & Music Lounge.
Tutubi doesn't advocate sex tourism, which he jokingly refers to as Air Force One tourism, referring to some people he knows who take visitors to the popular hangout near Manila's Airport. He respects the opposite sex and prefers not to have the same image as Thailand's famous Pat Pong district in Bangkok and instead strive for genuine and sustainable tourism development of which the country, not only Cebu, has a big potential.
Prostitution is illegal in the Philippines but it's practice is an open secret in other places like Angeles City, Quezon Avenue in Quezon City, Burgos St. in Makati among other tourist destinations.
What Tutubi can say about Cebu is that there are lots of "eye candies," in one place-- mga guwapa gyud mga Cebuana! :P

Waterfront Lahug Revisited and Reviewed

The first trip of Tutubi outside Luzon and also his first airplane ride took him to Cebu City for a work errand. He stayed at the imposing Waterfront Lahug. That "historic" trip was followed three more times to Cebu but those trips were not much documented nor posted in this blog except for a few archived entries.
This time, he returned to Cebu City and billeted again at the spanking Waterfront Lahug for a 3D/2N official trip amidst the eye of storm Frank lashing the "island in the Pacific."
Due to his busy schedule he wasn't able to research much about new destinations to explore in the "Queen City of the South" and worst, he wasn't aware of the presence of typhoon Frank (International code name: Fengshen) battering the city that explained why it was raining in the city when he was there (it was at this time when Sulpicio Lines' MV Princess of the Stars got a beating and sank near Sibuyan Island in Romblon)

Waterfront Lahug Review and Feedback:
Service staff and front desk are courteous. Complimentary bottled water are available. Newspaper are available for pick-up at the concierge. Breakfast is served at UNO restaurant with a wide selection of Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, American and European dishes to choose from. There's a direct access to a casino frequented by tourists and curious people alike. There's a Japanese restaurant (Mizu), Chinese, Italian with a Venetian twist and Duty-free shop all inside the premises. Restaurants in the vicinity include The Port Seafood Restaurant with their P400 buffet meal and a KTV Bar(that looks more like a hooker front owned by a Korean)
Taxis are plentiful to take you anywhere in the City e.g. taxi fare is just P50 to take you to SM City Cebu and about P150 from Cebu Airport. You may take a jeepney also to downtown Cebu if you feel like commuting around the city.
Lastly, this is not recommended for backpackers and budget travelers due to it's high price tag, there are lots of cheap accommodations (inns, pension houses,hostels and appartelles) in Cebu City that you can find due to it's popularity with tourists and retirees. The hotel is a popular events venue for weddings, parties and seminars/conferences.
Note: there are two Waterfront Hotels in Cebu, the other one is popularly called the Waterfront Mactan just in front of Mactan-Cebu International Airport. There's also Waterfront Manila Pavilion on UN Avenue in Manila and Waterfront Insular Hotel in Davao City.

Cebu, once marketed itself as "an island in the Pacific," has been experiencing a boom in economy and tourist arrivals and also now the favorite retirement place of Americans and Europeans as well as Koreans, Japanese and Chinese tourists making it a tropical island vacation come true - balmy weather, nice beaches, turquoise waters, and luxurious resorts that cater to usual tourists accustomed to comforts of city life as well as backpackers looking for cheap accommodations and basic facilities.
N.B.: This is a work in progress, to be edited and refined once photos and information are available.
Cebu City and the larger Metro Cebu is the ideal gateway to the backpacking Visayas trail due to the fact that you can explore nearby islands in the Visayas by hopping into a plane, boats/ferries/fast crafts, and buses.

Getting Out of Cebu:
At Mactan- Cebu International Airports, there are two halls: one for Domestic and another for International Departures. Note that terminal fees for domestic travel is PhP200 and PhP550 for international flights.
Should you wish to visit other islands, you can also hop on to various ferries and boats to nearby Leyte (Ormoc), Bohol (Tagbilaran City and Tubigon), Negros (Bacolod and Dumaguete City), Siquijor and Mindanao via Cagayan de Oro (CDO).
Buses to nearby islands are available either at Cebu North Terminal and South Bus Terminal, both in the heart of Cebu City.

Magellan's Cross - a wooden cross planted by Ferdinand Magellan (Magallanes, a Portuguese explorer/navigator in the service of the Spain) who arrived (not discovered) in the islands soon to be known as the Philippines in March 1521. Note that the true cross is inside the visible cross.

To get there (commute) from Cebu airport, flag a taxi to take you to Cebu North Bus Terminal, board a bus bound to Hagnaya. In Hagnaya, board a ferry for a 30-minute ride to Sta. Fe town on Bantayan Island.

From Cebu Airport, take a taxi to North Bus Terminal and ride a bus going to Bogo. Transfer to a jeepney going to Daangbantayan. A short boat ride in Daangbantayan will take you to the island with spectacular dive sites and white sand beaches.

Mactan, Cebu: Plantation Bay Day Tour

Fresh from wonderful snorkeling experience in Pescador Island off the coast of Moalboal, we headed to the upscale resort of Plantation Bay in Mactan Island.
To gain entrance to the facility, we informed the guards at the gates that we’re just going to eat inside. As we walked past the gates and into the well-manicured resort and hotel complex, we were informed that walking to our destination was not allowed and pointed us to free shuttle services.
As we got our butts warm at Kilimanjaro Restaurant, some of us ordered just deserts at touristy prices. Note: true to its being a 5 star resort, it has an astronomical price tag and no tipping policy of the resort.
After finishing our food, we took our time to take pictures of the man-made lagoons, beaches and swimming pools.
Overall, the resort publishes rates in US dollars targeting foreign tourists with nice facilities. For more information, pictures and rates, please visit the official website.

A gorgeous multi-layered waterfalls south of Cebu City, feeds a clean and green water of the river with lush vegetation and serene surroundings, Kawasan Falls is a different waterfalls that's pristine yet accessible from the big city

How to get to Badian, Cebu:
In Cebu City, you may take vans or bus at the South terminal then drop of in Badian. Board a tricycle to the jump-off point of Kawasan.
Directions for cars: from Cebu City, drive past Carcar (where Tutubi noticed the old houses of the town). On reaching Badian, drive to the village of Matutinao. A short 15-minute trek/light walk along the water of the clean and green river and several bridge crossing will be rewarded with the breathtaking sight of the three-layered waterfalls.
