Sightseeing Tour of Manila Itinerary (With Food Trip Too)

This was an actual Manila tour of Tutubi he "planned" for his Muslim guests recently which took them from Makati to Quiapo, Intramuros, Luneta and capped with Manila Bay Cruise all in a span of ten hours with little planning and decisions made on-the-fly, typical of Tutubi's spur-of-the-moment traveling style. The itinerary is, however, much too compressed, covered so much ground and ideal for travelers with only one day to spare, feel free to tweak to suit your preferences or just ask Tutubi.
Note: Tutubi doesn't really prepare an travel itinerary as he likes the thrill of discoveries of unplanned travel brings. This was a Saturday which means generally lighter traffic in Metro Manila. Tutubi has a car that's why he's fast for he knows how to navigate the inner streets, where to pass by, mostly avoiding streets where jeepneys (one primary cause of traffic in Manila) don't pass. Take a taxi to exactly follow the route and for faster travel instead of the jeepney. The itinerary route is also possible via public transportation.
8am Met up at Makati Hotel (Berjaya Hotel, which serves halal buffet breakfast)
8:10 Had Breakfast and shopping at Salcedo Weekend Market in Salcedo Village, Makati. Tutubi bought his favorite budbud kabog, his guests looked for halal breakfast, settled for vegetarian samosa at a Persian/Indian restaurant plus all variants of budbud kabog and suman.
Salcedo Weekend Market in Velasquez Park, Salcedo Village, Makati offers regional and international food specialties and delicacies. Open every Saturday from 6am to 2pm
9:am Left for Quiapo, Manila. passed by Osmena Highway (formerly called South Superhighway), right Quirino Avenue, left Paz Guanzon (just before Nagtahan Bridge), right Romualdez, cross Ayala Bridge, left to Carlos Palanca (formerly Echague) then park near Quinta Market (you can find "informal" parking attendants to guard your car on the street, PhP30.00 usual parking fee). Walked to Golden Mosque (you can take padyak or kuliglig for about PhP40.00)
9:45 Arrived at Golden Mosque (Tutubi's first time to get inside the Quiapo landmark) on Globo de Oro Street corner Gunao.

The wall is called "qibla wall." The mosque is usually full during Jumuah prayers on a Friday
10:00 Had brunch at a nearby halal eatery to sample mostly Maranao dishes (mostly yellow in color) fish with spicy coconut sauce and palapa and bodhi (fish roe) fulshed down with Maranao coffee. The neighboring streets of Globo de Oro, Norzagaray, Bautista, Elizondo and Gunao surrounding the Golden Mosque are lined with restaurants serving halal food for the Muslims living and doing business in the area, mostly Maranao and Tausug. You can even find Muslim "wares and wear"e.g. abaya, hijab, malong.
10:30 Took a padyak (human-powered tricycle or pedicab, fare: PhP10.00/person) to Quiapo Church after finding out the Lacson Underpass was closed for repairs).
the well-loved Quiapo Church is the center of the Black Nazarene procession annually held on January 9 and attended by millions of barefoot devotees.
Quiapo is the window to the soul of Manila and probably the Philippines. It's here where you can find Christians and Muslims living together in harmony, doing about business and daily grind. It's home to a famous Quiapo Church which is full of people on Fridays and also the Golden Mosque, where Muslims stop what they're doing to pray also on a Friday. It's also an area of ironies, where else can you find a Catholic Church surrounded by fortune tellers (manghuhula) and little stalls on the sidewalks selling herbal medicines (e.g. pito-pito, a concoction of seven herbs), amulets, anting-anting, katana (samurai swords), kris (Muslim royalty swords), balisong (butterfly knife) and the infamous pamparegla (sold in dark brown "lapad" bottles) which is a euphemism for abortifacient (abortion is illegal in the Philippines). It's also where you can find true Manila: gritty, grimy and non-pretentious.
Other places to see and visit in Quiapo include San Sebastian Church (a short jeepney ride away, take jeepneys on Hidalgo Street with signboards Balic-balic or Lealtad), San Miguel area (take San Miguel jeepneys near Quinta Market or Ilalim ng Tulay), the eyeglasses and optometrist haunt Paterno Street, the generator and power tools street of Evangelista, the fake ID/diploma/thesis/term papers/reaction paper/ street of Recto University, the iconic art deco buildings of Far Eastern University (FEU, where art works of several nationa artists can be found inside the campus), the Nakpil-Bautista house on Bautista Street (former home of Katipunan lakambini Gregoria de Jesus, and where the original painting of Juan Luna "The Parisian Life" used to hang)
Quiapo food trip destinations include Globe Lumpia (since 1953) on Gonzalo Puyat (formerly Raon, a favorite haunt of Tutubi for electronics (he's actually an electronics engineer by profession)), Excellente Ham (opened 1963) and Kim Chong Tin Hopia Factory (1927) on Carlos Palanca (formerly Echague, where stores selling home and kitchen wares can be found), Master Hopia on Villalobos Street, various regional food peddled on Hidalgo Street (the photographer's haven lined with camera shops) besides the Muslim halal restaurants near Golden Mosque (suggestions: bodhi, chicken papar (piaparan), arab spice roasted chicken, kabsa (arabian rice), beef rendang (Maranao style of Indonesian provenance), beef balbacua, pater rice (Maranao style binalot), chili and ginger), bakas (smoked whole tuna) in sticks and the quintessential Maranao spice called palapa (ingredients of toasted coconut, shallots, sakoreb/sakurab (native scallions)
11:00am Went to Intramuros via a jeepney. At the behest of his guests who wanted to try riding the jeepney, Tutubi called up his driver to proceed directly to Manila Cathedral and wait for them there. Tutubi and guests boarded a jeepney with signboard Quiapo - Pier and alighted at the corner of Antonio Luna and Andres Soriano (formerly Calle Real del Palacio) then walked to Fort Santiago (Entrance Fee/Admission: PhP75.00)
Fort Santiago, a Spanish fort near the mouth of Pasig River where once stood the palace Rajah Sulaiman, the Muslim ruler of Manila until the arrival of the Spaniards. The fort also once served as prison of Jose Rizal (the Philippine national hero, his last steps were imprinted on the road leading to Luneta (now Rizal Park) where he was executed by firing squad. There's also a bulwark facing Pasig River and a replica of Rizal's house in Calamba, Laguna serving as a museum.
11:30 Went out of Fort Santiago, looked around at a souvenir shop just outside Fort Santiago then proceeded to Plaza Roma in front of Manila Cathedral to look for a cochero and Intramuros Calesa Tour (calesa is a horse-drawn carriage) at a price of PhP350.00 for thirty minutes.
The calesa tour passed by these Intramuros landmarks: Manila Cathedral, Bahay Tsinoy (Filipino Chinese Museum), Memorare (Monument to the massacre during the Battle for Manila at the closing stage of World War II), Beaterio, Casa Manila (an old bahay na bato and museum, there's an entrance fee but Tutubi and his guests just requested the guard to enter the patio and take pictures), an old Japanese cannon seen from the walls, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), the the budget-friendly carinderias/eateries on the walls along Muralla with student patrons, Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT), Lyceum of the Philippines, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, the ruins of Interdencia then back to Manila Cathedral.
12:00 As it's lunch time, went to Shawarma Snack Center near Robinsons Place Malate on Salas Street. (Tutubi's guests were Muslims, that's why everything must be halal i.e. allowed to eat per the teachings of Islam). It's ironic that the restaurant ran out of shawarma, the only thing Tutubi wanted to eat there probably due to lunch time and he can't wait another 25 minutes for the next batch to be cooked, he ordered chicken tikka masala sandwich.
1:30pm Went to Rizal Park (Luneta) to see the Rizal Monument (near where Jose Rizal was shot and where his remains were buried permanently) and also the Kilometer Zero Marker (reference point of all kilometer markers all over the country). Also at Rizal Park is the Chinese Garden, Japanese Garden, Lapu-lapu monument, Quirino Grandstand and near it are Manila Ocean Park (oceanarium and other activities and shows for families, especially children), Museong Pambata (Children's Museum, the US Embassy, and Manila Hotel, Philippine Normal University, LRT UN Avenue Station, Planetarium, National Museum and National Art Gallery.
2:30pm Went to Sun Cruises terminal in CCP Complex for the Manila Bay Cruise. Good thing there's still tables available as it's a reservation required. Booked the 4pm cruise. Visited and took pictures of the Coconut Palace (now the official residence of the Vice-President of the Philippines)
3:00pm Went to Harbor Square for some coffee and rest tired feet after the Manila sightseeing tour
4:00pm Boarded the Sun Cruises yacht for the Manila Bay Cruise
Manila Bay Cruise is operated by Sun Cruises, the operator of Corregidor Island Tours, cruise time is around one hour which involves going south all the way to SM Mall of Asia then back. You need to book in advance for your seats unless you're lucky like Tutubi who was able to buy tickets walk-in. Recommend the 5pm cruise time slot for the sunset or the later 6pm slot during Saturday to see the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) fireworks.

Masjid Al-Dahab: Golden Mosque in Quiapo, Manila

The Golden Mosque is a landmark in Quiapo, Manila with its iconic gold dome, thus the name Golden Mosque. It was built in 1976 upon orders of then First Lady Imelda Marcos, in preparation for the visit of Libya's President Muammar al-Gaddafi (that was cancelled).
This is the first time Tutubi was able to set foot inside the famous mosque, the largest mosque in Metro Manila. He has only seen it from the outside (even from the Pasig River where the golden dome can be seen).

Tutubi intends to again visit Manila Ocean Park, not the 3D art and Mirror Maze at Seri Fantasy World, but their other main attractions like the oceanarium/Aquarium and sea lion show.

Manila's jeepney route is a chaotic mix of routes that overlap, with no central site with information on all the routes, not even the the Land Transportation Office doesn't have one, typical of Philippine government offices who're not doing their jobs right or efficiently yet demand bonuses and salary increase every time.
Tutubi, during his student years in the University Belt, and being an electronics engineering student, frequented Quiapo and explored it's nooks and crannies and has a still working knowledge of the place.

Quiapo Pier jeepneys cross Quezon Bridge then turn right at the foot towards Intramuros, pass by Bureau of Immigration, Manila Cathedral, out into Anda Circle, the entrance of South Harbor (Pier), Manila Hotel (and the way to Manila Ocean Park) then turn left on Burgos St [Manila Planetarium, old Senate Building, now National Art Gallery, Manila City Hall, Mehan Garden, Lawton/Liwasang Bonifacio, Park N Ride,Metropolitan Theater (The Met)] back to Quezon Bridge and Quiapo.
Pasay Taft Libertad Baclaran just pass by Taft Avenue up to Baclaran passing by Remedios Taft PGH; Vito Cruz and Buendia (Sen. Gil Puyat)
Jeepneys with Mabini signboards cross Quezon Bridge then turn right on Burgos St, left going to Rizal Park (Luneta) right on T.M. Kalaw then left Mabini St (this is a one-way street, M.H. del Pilar serves the return trips) up to either Harrison Plaza/ Vito Cruz, Libertad or Baclaran (this is one way to commute to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for passport applications and renewals)
Those with Taft on their signboards cross Quezon Bridge and will traverse Taft Avenue up to the farthest one posted on the signboard which can be: Kalaw, Herran (Pedro Gil), Remedios, PGH (Philippine General Hospital), Vito Cruz (Pablo Ocampo), Buendia (Gil Puyat), Libertad, EDSA Rotonda, and Baclaran.
Quiapo -Kalaw jeeps cross Quezon Bridge [Lawton/Liwasang Bonifacio, Post Office Building, Manila City Hall], proceed under Lagusnilad Bridge to Taft Avenue [Philippine Normal University (PNU), Sta. Isabel College, the old site of Jai Alai Building (demolished on the order of heritage-blind former Manila mayor Lito Atienza), Masagana Department Store] then turn right on T.M. DOT NCHP Byaheng Bonifacio: Byaheng Bayani ng Bayan

When the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP, formerly National Historical Institute (NHI)) launched the Jose Rizal @150 Heritage Trail Project, Tutubi wasn't able to get even a Rizal passport (you need to get it at the DOT) and though he has been to most of the sites mentioned there to be visited, he didn't bother to re-visit just to get a stamp.
Now here comes the celebration of the 150th birthday of Andres Bonifacio that will culminate on Bonifacio Day, as knows how to get to all the places associated with Andres Bonifacio in Metro Manila (one particular site is within 10 minutes from his home).
Now, he will secure first the Byaheng Bonifacio brochure then visit the sites in Manila, Mandaluyong, San Juan, Pasig and Quezon City taking public transportation, then he will visit the site in Rodriguez Rizal then finally probably a road trip to Cavite with Scarlett (Tutubi's Toyota Innova, can you guess the color? :)

Visit the sites featured in the Bonifacio @ 150 brochures and paste your photos taken at the sites provided. The first 100 participants to complete shall receive a token and a Byaheng Bonifacio: Byaheng Bayani ng Bayan certificate, subject to validation by the NHCP. All finishers will receive a Ka- Byahe ni Bonifacio certificate.

How to get there:
Taxis are available going to the area. Tricycles are available along Congressional Avenue going to the site.
Parking available within the park.
No dining and rest stops available near the area. The location is next to the Pugad Lawin High School and Quezon City General Hospital. The Shrine is open daily 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

How to get there:
UP Ikot jeepneys are available going to the area then board a tricycle going to the barangay hall.
Taxis are also available going to the area.
Tips: Street parking only.
6. Pinaglabanan Shrine, San Juan City
Pinaglabanan St., San Juan City
How to get there:
From Recto, buses are available going to Ortigas, alight at Pinaglabanan St. in San Juan. Jeeps are available going to the site.
From Ortigas, ride a bus going to Quiapo, alight at Pinaglabanan st in San Juan City.
Tips: Parking and comfort rooms are available on-site. The Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine is open daily. The Museo ng Katipunan is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 Am – 4:00 PM.
7. Hagdang Bato, Mandaluyong
Hagdang Bato Barangay Center, A. Bonifacio St., Mandaluyong City
How to get there:
Jeepneys from Kalentong, Quiapo and Pasig passes by Shaw Boulevard. Alight at Bonifacio St. Tricycles are available going to the Hagdang Bato Barangay Center.

3D Trick Art Museum, Seri Fantasy World in Manila Ocean Park

Was able to buy several coupons for this new attraction inside Manila Ocean Park driven by his curiosity with the 3D art "museum" where you can take wacky pictures with classic art pieces on display. Here's a nice "photo-op" place inside a small room with 3D art works painted by Korean artists.

Jose Rizal@150 Heritage Trail Project (Lakbay Jose Rizal by DOT and NHCP)

A project of the Department of Tourism and the national Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP, formerly the National Historical Institute (NHI)) in celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the country's national hero, Rizal @ 150 Heritage Trail Project (Lakbay Jose Rizal) requires "amazing race" participants to secure Lakbay Rizal passport, visit all 27 places Jose Rizal visited and have "visas" stamped on the Rizal@150 passport. The first 100 people to complete the list of 27 sites shall receive a token from the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Herewith is the list of places Jose Rizal visited required you too visit to complete the Lakbay Rizal heritage trail. Note that Tutubi has been to all Rizal Shrines except 4 on the list. If only there's crediting of previous visits to the various Jose Rizal Shrines, Tutubi would have almost completed the list by now :(

WARNING: If you have an SLR/DSLR, be prepared to be harassed by the "Guardia Civil" of the Intramuros Administration (IA) who still have the medieval thinking that SLR cameras are for professional photographers only thus require you apply for a "permit to shoot" for a fee. A tourist spot promoted by the DOT and yet you can't take a souvenir picture with an SLR to share with friends for the world to "like." The rule is applied inconsitently where Tutubi was harrased by security guards for taking pictures of Manila Catheral and yet left a foreign tourist alone taking photos of the same Intramuros landmark. Such is the shame here, Jose Rizal would have cried out loud for such archaic and discriminatory practice against the indios of today.
The NHCP, however, through the forward mindset of Prof. Ambeth Ocampo, now allow photography at their shrines, thus the various pictures of Rizal Shrines on this post.

Everybody knows Rizal didn't get straight "sobresaliente" grades here in Medical school, one subject even had a passing grade

Lastly, did you know that Tutubi was able to visit two sites related to Jose Rizal in Hong Kong, the first one's the site of clinic (on D'Aguilar Street) and the second one's his home where he stayed on Rednaxela Terrace (the long escalator).
Probably next year, he'll also explore the places Jose Rizal visited in Singapore.

How to Get to Fort Santiago: Entrance Fee, Commute, and Directions

Still another post for the upcoming celebration of Rizal's 150th birth anniversary, besides a visit to Rizal Park (Luneta), another place worth your the is the historic Fort Santiago, the fortress at the mouth of Pasig River that also served as prison of Jose Rizal before his execution on December 30, 1896.
Note: There will be a Rizaliana party at Fort Santiago on June 19 at 6pm with food courtesy of Illustrado and Adarna Restaurant. Free entrance if you can come in 19th century period Filipiniana costume, otherwise it's only P100 to join the party and evening of art, music, poetry and fireworks.

How to commute to Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Manila:
From Quezon City, the easiest way is to board jeepneys with signboard Quiapo/Pier (either from Project 2/3, Cubao, Fairview, Proj 8, Project 6) that pass by inside Intramuros (just request the driver to drop you off within walking distance of Fort Santiago)
From LRT, the nearest station is Central Station where you can walk to the foot of Quezon Bridge to ride the Pier jeepneys from Quiapo (or also from Carriedo Station where Pier jeepneys pass by Quiapo Church) Only minimum fare required.
Driving Directions to Fort Santiago, Intramuros, Manila:
From Makati, the easiest way is from Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue (Buendia) or Ayala Avenue is just drive towards Roxas Boulevard all the way to Anda Circle (roundabout) where you turn right to Soriano then left turn to Gen. Luna (Landmark: Palacio del Governador) just before reaching Manila Cathedral.
From Quezon City, you can get there easiest (but not fastest) via Quezon Avenue then Espana, Lerma and Quiapo, cross Quezon Bridge then turn right immediately after Quezon Bridge to Riverside Drive (that pass under MacArthur and Jones Bridge). When you see Manila Cathedral, Plaza Roma and Palacio del Governador, you can get off then walk to your right going to Fort Santiago.
Parking: an open car park is just beside the entrance gate of Fort Santiago with parking fee of PhP40 for cars. Intramuros, ins spite of it's tourist attraction tag, has very limited parking spaces though if you can't park there. There are parking lots at the old clam shell and also at the site of the old Ayuntamiento near Plaza Roma or street parking on General Luna and the area around Plaza Roma in front of Manila Cathedral.
Fort Santiago
Entrance Fee/Admission price: PhP75.00 adults; PhP50 children/students/teachers (valid IDs required); free entrance for disabled and senior citizens
Open Hours/Schedule: daily from 8am to 6pm including holidays
Coordinates: N14 35 39.1 E120 58 13.1 (handy for GPS device users)
For guided tours of Fort Santiago, educational tours and field trips, you can request from Intramuros Administration (where you also request a "permit to shoot" for professional photographers)
Warning: there still exists the stupid rule of security not allowing "big cameras" i.e. SLR/DSLR for taking pictures/photography inside Fort Santiago and Intramuros in general (unless you're a foreigner). Such medieval mind of security guards and of the Intramuros Administration tag SLRs are for professional photographers only.

From Makati, the easiest way is from Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue (Buendia) or Ayala Avenue is just drive towards Roxas Boulevard all the way to Anda Circle (roundabout) where you turn right to Soriano then left turn to Gen. Luna (Landmark: Palacio del Governador) just before reaching Manila Cathedral.
From Quezon City, you can get there easiest (but not fastest) via Quezon Avenue then Espana, Lerma and Quiapo, cross Quezon Bridge then turn right immediately after Quezon Bridge to Riverside Drive (that pass under MacArthur and Jones Bridge). When you see Manila Cathedral, Plaza Roma and Palacio del Governador, you can get off then walk to your right going to Fort Santiago.
Parking: an open car park is just beside the entrance gate of Fort Santiago with parking fee of PhP40 for cars. Intramuros, ins spite of it's tourist attraction tag, has very limited parking spaces though if you can't park there. There are parking lots at the old clam shell and also at the site of the old Ayuntamiento near Plaza Roma or street parking on General Luna and the area around Plaza Roma in front of Manila Cathedral.
Fort Santiago
Entrance Fee/Admission price: PhP75.00 adults; PhP50 children/students/teachers (valid IDs required); free entrance for disabled and senior citizens
Open Hours/Schedule: daily from 8am to 6pm including holidays
Coordinates: N14 35 39.1 E120 58 13.1 (handy for GPS device users)
For guided tours of Fort Santiago, educational tours and field trips, you can request from Intramuros Administration (where you also request a "permit to shoot" for professional photographers)
Warning: there still exists the stupid rule of security not allowing "big cameras" i.e. SLR/DSLR for taking pictures/photography inside Fort Santiago and Intramuros in general (unless you're a foreigner). Such medieval mind of security guards and of the Intramuros Administration tag SLRs are for professional photographers only.

Jose Rizal Street in Sampaloc, Manila

A true-blooded Paetenian, Tutubi was a "Batang Sampaloc" for 10 years, where he and his siblings hopped from one "room for rent" starting from one on Algeciras St. near the PNR train tracks where the PNR train became the alarm clock with loud horns and "earthquake."
Near his first "home" in Sampaloc, Manila are the Rizaliana streets of Sampaloc Manila: P. Florentino, Pi y Margal, Dapitan, Laong Laan, Maria Clara, Simoun, Calamba, Makiling, Retiro, and Dimasalang.
From Sampaloc, Tutubi transferred to Reten near P. Noval, Miguelin, Sulucan (near the twin churches of Bustillos), Lardizabal (near Legarda) then "leveled up" to several "apartments for rent." On Prudencio St. From Sampaloc near Balic-balic, he transferred to Makati near Rizal Village, lived for a short time in Pasig City near Kapitolyo then finally to his present home in Quezon City.
The Mabuhay Rotonda marks the boundary of Manila and Quezon City. At the back is España, Sampaloc, Manila going to Quiapo

P. Florentino St.
Named after Padre Florentino in Rizal’s second novel El Filibusterismo. Padre Florentino was priest and a friend to some of the novel’s characters. On P. Florentino street stands the transmission tower of Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) near Welcome Rotonda (now Mabuhay Rotonda).
Piy Margal Street
An erroneously spelled street named after Francisco Pi y Margall, a "friend" of Rizal, and president (for only more than a month) of the short-lived Spanish Republic of 1873. Pi y Margall advocated autonomy for Spain's colonies including the Philippines as well as other "radical" ideas at the time.
Dapitan Street
The rural town of Mindanao where Jose Rizal was exiled, built a home, school from his lottery prize, and "married" Josephine Bracken, now called the Shrine City of Dapitan, part of Zamboanga del Norte. Dapitan hosts several of the 27 places with historical ties to Jose Rizal listed in the Lakbay Rizal (Rizal@150 Heritage)
Laong Laan
One of the pseudonyms of Jose Rizal (Laong Laan meaning in English: Ever Prepared). In a letter to Marcelo H. Del Pilar in 1890, Jose Rizal wrote:
“In my boyhood it was my strong belief that I would not reach the age of thirty, and I do not know why I used to think in that way. For two months now almost every night I dream of nothing but of friends and relatives who are dead. I even dreamed once that I was descending a path leading into the depths of persons seated and dressed in white, with white faces, quiet, and encircled in white light. There I saw two members of my family, one now already dead and the other still living. Even though I do not believe in such things and though my body is very strong and I have not sickness of any kind, nonetheless I prepare myself for death, arranging what I have to leave and disposing myself for any eventuality. Laong Laan (Ever Prepared) is my real name.”
Laon Laan is a one-way street going north while Dapitan allows the opposite south-bound direction going to Quiapo. These two streets are where the Quiapo - Dapitan jeepneys ply their route. Near the ends of these two roads, you can find Dapitan Arcade, where you can buy housewares and native products at bargain prices.
Maria Clara St.
From high school days with the studies of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo mandated by the Rizal law (principally authored by Sen. Claro M. Recto and fought by the bishops and priests of the Catholic Church like the now raging RH Bill), Maria Clara was the love of the character Crisostomo Ibarra of Noli Me Tangere.
Other minor streets of Sampaloc with Rizaliana links are Basilio, Sisa, Ibarra and Crisostomo all from the national hero's first novel while Simoun, from the vengeful Don Simoun of Rizal's second novel who's actually Ibarra disguised as a jeweler from Cuba.
Calamba and Makiling Streets
The next streets parallel to Maria Clara are Calamba, after Jose Rizal's hometown and birthplace. On Calamba, sandwiched by Sisa and Instruccion Streets is the Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro Parish (Our Lady of Perpertual Help Parish). Makiling is named after the mystical mountain near Calamba and cited in some of Rizal's works.
Retiro
Now "stupidly" renamed by Manila politicians after Norbeto Amoranto Sr., was inspired by Jose Rizal's poem "Mi Retiro" written in Dapitan.

Blumentritt
After Rizal's best friend Prof. Ferdinand Blumentritt to whom Rizal exchanged many letters. His mastery of the Tagalog language made Rizal write him, along with a Tagalog book on arithmetic, that marked the beginning of their beautiful friendship.
Dimasalang
Another one of Jose Rizal's pen names, it means "untouchable" from the Tagalog "di masalang" now used as one word. At the intersection of this street with Maria Clara and along Dos Castillas Street stands Dangwa (Manila Flower Market) where fresh flowers from Baguio City are unloaded weekly by Dangwa Bus Company (thus the name Dangwa Flower Market). The other segment hosts several shops selling "chop-chop" parts of antique, or rather, heritage houses.
Morayta
Morayta Street, now called Nicanor Reyes where Far Eastern University (FEU) is located, was named after University of Madrid (Universidad de Madrid) professor of history Miguel Morayta. It was through Prof. Morayta that Rizal became a freemason under the Gran Oriente de Español, where he adopted Dimasalang as his Masonic name.
Near Morayta and University of Sto. Tomas (UST) are the streets of P. Noval (Padre Noval, where you can ride the PVP Liner bus to Ayala Avenue in Makati), P. Campa (Padre Campa), and P. Paredes.
Other prominent streets of Sampaloc, Manila are the twin one-way streets of V.G. Cruz (formerly Economia), M. Dela Fuente (formerly Trabajo, where the old Baron Theater used to stand), A.H. Lacson (formerly Gov. Forbes, named after former Manila mayor Arsenio Lacson, and where the west-bound jeepneys plying the Tayuman - Lardizabal route pass), Maceda, S.H Loyola (Sergio H. Loyola, formerly Lepanto), Fajardo (formerly Lealtad), G. Tuazon (where the Balic-balic jeepneys pass) Earnshaw, Bayani, and Santol
Lastly, España Boulevard, Sampaloc, Manila's main street is not named with Jose Rizal in mind but it's a condition stipulated on the deed of donation of a portion of Dominican land of UST that the street fronting the oldest university in Asia be named Espana.
España therefore is one of the those streets of Manila that stupid, historically-challenged, heritage-agnostic politicians of Manila cannot change lest the street reverts to Dominican hands.

Manila: National Museum Entrance Fee, Museum Hours and Photography

Tutubi visited the National Museum in Manila (officially the Museum of the Filipino People) in Rizal Park (Luneta) quite recently to tour his two friends from France and herewith are the latest information on the National Museum entrance fees and museum hours and contact numbers for educational field trips for schools, and group tours.

Photography at the National Museum
On taking pictures inside the National Museum (photography), it has slightly improved that they now allow taking pictures inside the museum except you cannot use flash (it's understandable sine some objects on display ma be sensitive to light) and that only small cameras are allowed. Bringing in of "big" cameras i.e. SLR and DSLR require special permits from the National Museum curator. Those people are still armed with archaic ideas that DSLRs are used exclusively by professional photographers.

How to Get to Manila Zoo: Entrance Fee, Map, Commute, Directions

Just to answer a question on some commenters asking "how to get to Manila Zoo" on Tutubi's other posts, instead of answering endlessly on the post, these directions and How-to will more than suffice. Please read thoroughly before asking and hitting the comments, most commenters though are too lazy tor read and ask questions with answers already present on the blog post if only they bothered to read.

Via LRT 1, the nearest station is Quirino Avenue where you can actually walk westward (towards Baywalk) about 300 meters. From MRT, you can get there via MRT Taft Avenue Station (or North Avenue Station in the future). From LRT 2, you can transfer to LRT 1 at Recto Station then connect to LRT Doroteo Jose station.
Jeepneys from Quezon City passing by Espana and Quiapo, take jeepneys with sighboard Harrisson/Vito Cruz and Mabini. Just request the driver to drop you off in front. This is the same for jeepneys on Rizal Avenue (Avenida) and Sta. Cruz.
From Baclaran, you can take the LRT and get off at Quirino Avenue station or better, just ride a jeep to Quiapo/Sta. Cruz/Divisoria with Mabini on the signboard (never the ones with Taft as they don't pass by in front of the zoo)
