"Secret" Hot Spring Resort in Sta. Maria, Laguna

Hot spring resorts are best on rainy days, not during summer!

Laguna is blessed with natural hot spring resorts, claimed to have therapeutic properties, with hot natural spring water heated by Mt. Makiling, a dormant volcano.

After a friend of his father tipped him off about a "secret" hot spring resort in Sta. Maria town, north of Paete, and very near the public cemetery of the town, the home of Three Sisters Falls, Tutubi thought of visiting it when the opportunity presented itself thus another unplanned discovery trip successfully accomplished.

the simple, "secret" hot spring resort in Sta. Maria, Laguna:

a net partially covers the large swimming pool. very good cover when it rains, you don't need to get out of the water

a small children's pool is also nearby, well, for kids

coconut trees and palms surround the area, still under development, giving the rustic feel

a group from Tanay, Rizal doing water zumba

By the way, this is just a warm spring resort, not really hot water. Tutubi finds laguna hot springs as too hot, particularly during summer, this is just right temperature to dip in the whole day even if it's raining.

Tutubi, in his probably senior moment, forgot the name of the resort but remembers the following details:

Entrance Fee: PhP50.00 (cheap, isn't it?)
Free use of tables (there are cottages too but they didn't charge, no idea on price though)
Parking is free but inadequate. The service road leading to the resort may get flooded
Toilets/ Shower room: relatively clean, don't expect five star amenities at the cheap admission fee
Food: bring your own food and drinks
videoke: the omnipresent Filipino entertainment at resorts
Overnight accommodations/room rates: not available at this time, planned though
    Night swimming rate: P100.00

    How to get there?

Follow this Commute to Laguna guide for starters

From Siniloan public market, take a tricycle to Sta. Maria and tell the driver about the resort using the access road that goes inside Sta. Maria public cemetery.

If you have your own vehicle, coming from Rizal province, turn left on reaching the junction of Sta. Maria and Mabitac towns on Manila East Road then turn right on the service road of the cemetery. follow direction signs, you won't get lost :P

Panguil River Eco-park (Piit Resort) Pangil, Laguna

A now getting popular cold water resort, formerly called Piit resort in Pangil, Laguna, once visited by Tutubi many moons ago, got much development and funding from the World bank, yet managed to preserve the pristine state of Panguil River, fed by Ambon-ambon Falls upstream, and empties into Laguna de Bay.

Several times Tutubi wanted to re-visit the now developed Piit Resort, the chance came with a rare time his entire family was complete in Paete, Laguna and where the plan to visit Pangil River Eco-park (Piit Resort) became a reality. Tutubi and his family arrived at Piit Resort around 11am, on several tricycles (PhP80.00 per tricycle), and left shortly around 1pm, barely enough time to wander around, take pictures but too focused on his "mini-me" frolicking on the cold water of the nature resort surrounded with lush greens, trees, birds and butterflies from Sierra Madre mountain range.

Pictures of Panguil River Eco-park, Pangil Laguna (formerly Piit Resort):

Panguil River Eco-park, Pangil LagunaPanguil River Eco-park's clean river and river-side cottages with the hanging bridge on the background

Panguil River Eco-park has a ncie receiving area, clean restrooms, a 20 meter hanging bridge, kiddie swimming pool, a dam/spillway, cottages for rent, a gazebo for events (e.g. weddings, debut), a one kilometer trail to Ambon-ambon Falls (Tutubi intends to visit this next summer), camp sites and a police station nearby. Other activities besides swimming, and family picnic includes white water river tubing (using car wheel interiors to drift on the white water of Panguil River).

Panguil River Eco-park, Pangil Laguna swimming poolthe kiddie pool is the recommended palce for kids to have some water fun, not on the spillway

hanging bridge piit resort pangil lagunathe 20 meter long hanging bridge provides a nice photo-op and birds eye view of Panguil River

spillway dam pangil river lagunathe spillway is the fun place to cool down, probably filled with people during summer but solely for Tutubi's family when he got there. Beware of the dangerous part of the spillway (the left side, not shown on the picture)

ambon-ambon falls pangil lagunaTutubi's wishlist nest summer, he's wants to visit all of Laguna's waterfalls before he gets too old to visit them

Next summer, a visit to Ambon-ambon falls is in the offing. There's also a hidden falls there while neighboring Famy and Siniloan towns get the most attention from mountaineers and mountain climbers due to the presence of five waterfalls of Mt. Romelo including Buruwisan, Batya-batya and Sampaloc Falls.

    ---

Suggestion: since there already is a dam, the untapped water power can be harnessed to generate electric power by building a micro-hydroelectric power plant. It can supply electricity to the resort, a source of clean, renewable energy, even to Pangil town to power up street lighting, for example, saves people's money.

To be also more eco-friendly, why not educate people against the use of plastic bags/styropor inside the resort, not just on waste segregation. Pangil can also emulate the move of Paete to ban the use of plastic bags.

    WARNING:

the dam and spillway is a nice area to play around but danger lurks on the spillway canal where the outlet has no grills. Just one "faux pas" or a slip can result to serious injury or death. Pangil local government should construct grills at the mouth of the spillway to avoid accidents, don't wait for the day this warning becomes a reality. Flash floods can also occur anytime during rainy season, stay at the kiddie pool if there are vulnerable children with you in case there's heavy rain.

    Panguil River Eco-park Entrance Fee:

    Day rate (6am to 6pm): PhP40.00
    Night Rate (6pm to 6am): PhP80.00
Overnight rate (more than 12 hours but not more than 24 hours): PhP100.00

    cottage rental rates:

    small house/cottage: PhP200.00

How to get to Panguil River Eco-park, Pangil, Laguna

From Taft Avenue near corner Gil Puyat (LRT Buendia station), ride a Green Star Express bus to Sta. Cruz, Laguna (or an HM Transport bus to Sta. Cruz, Laguna from EDSA, Cubao, Quezon City) (Bus fare fare is around PhP140.00). In Sta. Cruz (Pagsawitan or at the Jam bus terminal), transfer to a jeepney bound for Siniloan (jeepney fare is around PhP30.00), drop off in Pangil town then ride a tricycle to Piit (sitio Piit or barangay piit as how locals call the place).

Alternate route via Rizal Province, ride Tanay-bound jeepneys at EDSA Central terminal. In Tanay, Rizal, transfer to a Siniloan-bound jeepney. In Siniloan public market, either take a jeepney bound to Sta. Cruz then a tricycle in Pangil or negotiate with a tricycle driver to take you there directly.

You may also take a Raymond Transportation bus to Infanta/Real Quezon, drop off at the Siniloan/Famy junction on Manila East Road then take tricycle to Piit.

Driving directions to Panguil River Eco-park:

If you have a GPS navigator, Piit resort is present on OpenStreetMap (added by Tutubi). The service road going to Piit is linked to Manila East Road, do not enter Siniloan nor Pangil town proper. There's a sign visible on the highway after passing the junction of Siniloan, Famy and Mabitac.

Laguna: Waterfalls of Kalayaan (Twin Falls Resort)

Just what makes planned trips frustrating is that most of the time, they don't materialize mostly due to dependencies involving other people. Tutubi has a high "completion rate" for trips he took on his own, not so when other people are in it.

The recent planned trip to Piit Resort in Pangil town (now renamed http://www.backpackingphilippines.com/2011/08/panguil-river-eco-park-piit-resort.html) and/or Turumba Swimming Pool (now Turumba Springs Resort or the Panghulo (formerly known as Nuestra Señora delos Dolores de Turumba Swimming Pool), both visited by the child Tutubi, did not push through due to rains and some commitments in Tutubi's "entourage" but he opted to push through with another place he wanted to re-visit: The Twin Falls of Kalayaan, Laguna.

The town of Kalayaan, Laguna, Paete's next-door neighbor has not just one, but two, waterfalls (e.g. Paete has it's own waterfall, Pakil has one, Pangil at least two, Siniloan has 6, Sta. Maria has about 3 waterfalls, Pagsanjan/Cavinti have the world-famous Pagsanjan Falls (magdapio falls), Los banos Baños has Dampalit Falls et al) that Tutubi visited when he was still a child together with his brothers.

A last minute decision to visit any of the three mentioned resorts near Paete was reached when Tutubi's father confirmed the presence of parking area near the twin waterfalls, and so the 10 minute drive from Paete to Kalayan pushed through.

On arrival at the resort around 4:30pm, Tutubi was informed that the resort will close at 5pm and that cleaning of the pool was taking place, but the gatekeeper let them enter the resort premises for free, something that is really good for Tutubi for he didn't intend to swim due to the already cold weather (the water there is already cold even during summer). Tutubi only wanted to check out the place to take pictures for additional "bloggable" place, he took a few pictures, again showing his lazy way not to bring a tripod (and an ND filter), and went to chat with his first cousin hanging out at the resort, someone he hasn't seen for quite a while.

kalayaan twin fallsthe first cascade of several waterfalls, this is not one of the twin falls but the first waterfall you can see. The man is catching fish or probably mountain shrimps/prawns besides adding scale to the picture

waterfalls in lagunaanother cascade, still not the twin falls of Kalayaan, but children falls :P

the lower waterfall of Kalayaan Twin Falls (partly hidden by lush vegetation) whose basin/lagoon now developed into a swimming pool. The other twin falls can be reached through concrete steps/stairs on the mountain sides (the Sierra Madre mountain range). Tutubi didn't bother trekking up due to limited time as rains may spoil the hike.

Kalayaan Twin falls, to Tutubi's expectation, is now a barangay operated resort with the huge basin now turned into a swimming pool with marble bottom. He remembers the lagoon before surrounded with huge rocks where you can hop on top but quite slippery.

After a few pictures and chit-chat with resort gatekeeper and his cousin, Tutubi left off without a visit the real twin of the waterfalls that can be reached via concrete steps.

Two memorable waterfalls for Tutubi, a re-visit in the future not far off :P

    ---

    Kalayaan Twin Falls
    Entrance Fee/Admission: PhP40.00 (adult) PhP20.00 (child)
Overnight rate: PhP100.00 (minimum of 20 persons) from 4pm to 8am
    Parking Fee: PhP10.00
Resort closes at 5pm, opens at 8am

How to get to Kalayaan Twin Falls:

Commute to Kalayaan involves a bus ride to Sta. Cruz, Laguna (HM Transport from EDSA, Cubao, or either Green Star Express, or DLTB in Pasay Taft/LRT/Buendia) followed by a jeepney ride (with signboard: Siniloan or Paete). Request jeepney driver to pass by Kalayaan Highway (not loob or town proper), alight in front of St. John Evangelist Parish (San Juan Evangelista) on Manila East Road (national highway) then walk about 400 meters upwards to the waterfalls (you pass by Villa Monte Gracia Resort on the way)

Talagang Dalaga Resort in Paete, Laguna

With an initial intention to visit either 818 Resort in Pagsanjan or Piit Resort (now Paguil River Eco-park in Pangil town), the trip was almost cancelled due to unpredictable coming of heavy rain but pushed through not at the mentioned resorts but the one of nearest resorts to Tutubi-- Talagang Dalaga, a mountainside resort with water supplied by the aquifers of the Sierra Madre mountain.

talagang dalaga resort paete lagunathe entrance of the resort with a damsel not in distress

Tutubi was surprised at the development of the resort, he visited it many years ago and it was just a simple pool, much like Pakil's Turumba Public Swimming Pool that he used to swim at then hitch a ride in jeepneys, sabit-style, due to his still dripping wet clothes.

1 of the resort's three swimming pools. deepest at 6 feet. No other people there since it rained (yeah, it always rains in Paete, called "pusali ng langit" by locals, due to the tropical rainforest sub-climate, according to PAGASA)

the highest of the 3 waterfalls. from this level you can already get a view of Laguna de Bay

Talagang Dalaga is now a full-blown resort, not just a swimming pool with mountain rocks (quite similar to the now "extinct" Black Hawk of Paete) but without the expensive restaurant due to its small town feel. you can bring in food to eat with your family, no corkage fees.
