Tutubi knows most people will leave Metro Manila during Holy Week, but this time, he won't be one of them in escaping the summer sun of the metropolis to the beach or Visita Iglesia outside Mega Manila. He intends to stay in the big city probably to drive around to enjoy traffic-free thoroughfares (except EDSA).

If you're like Tutubi staying again in Manila in Holy Week, brace yourself for super heavy traffic on EDSA and other parts of the city as DPWH will have concrete re-blocking from Tuesday (April 15) to Sunday April 20. Normally, MMDA suspends number coding starting Tuesday April 15. Makati though, historically, does not suspend number coding during Holy Week


Only SM Baguio is really open for business during Holy Week (Robinsons in Tagaytay is also open)

In the days of yore, Metro Manila used to be a ghost town during Holy Week, all malls were closed and TV stations, if not broadcasting, showed movie/series marathons of Ten Commandments, The Passion of the Christ, Seventh Heaven or anything pre-programmed yet without or very few advertisements except the required station IDs by NTC

This post lists down what's closed and what's not during Holy Week in Metro Manila and places within three hours of travel time for city dwellers stuck in Manila.

Holy Week Scenario in Manila

SM Malls are closed in Holy Week (on Holy Thursday and Good Friday and open on Black Saturday and Easter Sunday, March 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 2013) except the restaurants around SM Mall of Asia. Same situation with Trinoma, Greenbelt, Glorietta, Eastwood Mall, Walter Mart, Power Plant Mall, UP-Ayala Technohub, Shangri-la Mall, Greenhills Shopping Center, Robinsons Malls, Serendra, Market! On Easter Sunday, come with the whole family to Star City open only a day in holy week.

For the curious, pay a visit to Quiapo Church to look for newly-blessed talismans, amulets, charms, and agimat sold in the church vicinity on Good Friday



Suggested Things to Do and Places to Visit Within Three Hours Travel Time from Manila:

Participate in the Alay Lakad to Antipolo Church by walking on Ortigas Avenue all the way towards the popular Catholic pilgrimage site (and car blessings)

Bring family with kids to Enchanted Kingdom (only on Black Saturday and Easter Sunday).

Enchanted Kingdom is open on March 30 and March 31 only from 11am to 9pm

Go Wakeboard in Nuvali in Sta. Rosa then cool down later in Tagaytay (Sky Ranch is an option though not recommended place at this time, there may be too many people with very limited parking spaces and heavy traffic)

Go on a roadtrip around Rizal and Laguna

Witness live crucifixion in Cutud, Pampanga

Visit the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Marilao, Bulacao

Do a Visita Iglesia in Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga, Cavite or Batangas

Make a pilgrimage trip to the Giant Mother Mary statue in Tanay, Rizal or the giant Jesus statue at
Kamay ni Hesus in Lucban Quezon.

If you can't stand the heat of summer, particularly on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, just stay at home, take a bath from time to time, turn on the electric fan/aircon and the TV.

Just don't forget the true meaning of Lent and you'll be fine :P

Holy Week Travel Tip: withdraw money from ATM as early as possible to avoid long lines or offline ATM out of cash. All banks are closed from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday and banking services will resume only on April 1. Banks in malls (e.g. BDO, Chinabank, Bank of the Philippine Islands(BPI), Metrobank, PNB, RCBC, Landbank, Robinsons Bank, East West Bank, Unionbank, Security Bank, UCPB) possibly have only ATM online. Expect lots of off-line ATMs due to out of cash scenarios.

Stuck in Metro Manila in Holy Week, like Tutubi and also allergic to malls and usual trips? Herewith is a suggested itinerary for a day or two around the so called Laguna Loop route:

Old Churches of Rizal (Visita Iglesia)
Baras Church

Tanay Church

after visiting Tanay Church, you can proceed to the giant Mother Mary shrine in Rizal in Sampaloc, Tanay near Camp Capinpin and Marcos Highway called Regina RICA

the shade under the giant statue can seat about 70 people. there's an adoration chapel insde the statue, the only place where picture taking is not allowed. guests are requested to dress modestly and keep quiet

Old Churches of Laguna (Visita Iglesia) with coordinates for your GPS:

Pakil Church: St. Peter of Alcantara Parish
Paete Church: St. James the Apostle Parish
Longos Church (Kalayaan): San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist)
Lumban Church
Pagsanjan Church: Our Lady of Guadalupe (not old though, it's reconstructed)

In Pakil, you can trek up Mt. Ping-as to visit the Holy Cross where a viewpoint offers a magnificent vista of Pakil town and Laguna de Bay.

In Paete, you may opt to drive to the top of the hill for the Tatlong Krus,
similar to the biblical Three Crosses on Calvary Hill in Jerusalem

After Reaching Pagsanjan, you can opt to turn left after passing Pagsanjan Church (Our Lady of Guadalupe) and Pagsanjan Municipal Hall towards Cavinti and Luisiana (where the old churches await) en route to Lucban ( to visit Kamay ni Hesus, an already popular pilgrimage site on the hillsides of the Sierra Madre



From Lucban, you can drive back to Majayjay and Liliw where two old churches again await.

On Good Friday, you don't have much choice, you can however visit Manila Ocean Park which is open during the entire Holy Week.

For people, either by choice or by "force" staying in Metro Manila, herewith is the operating schedules of Manila's LRT and MRT for the benefit of the commuting public.

Basically, the MRT, LRT and LRT2 will cease operating on Holy Thursday up to Easter Sunday for maintenance (as there's also na expected drop in passenger volume) and will resume normal operations on April 9, 2012. This is consistent with their released annual announcements of the previous years.

Normal schedules of MRT trains: Mondays to Sundays is from 5am to 11pm while the usual operating hours of LRT and LRT 2 is from 5am to 11pm on weekdays and 5am to 930pm on weekends.

Note that first trip for the MRT is Southbound (North Avenue to Taft Avenue) at 5am. The same train will embark on the return trip about 3o minutes later.

The last trip for MRT Southbound leaves North Avenue station about 10pm and the same train will leave Taft Avenue about 1030pm (this is so because the MRT train depot is near North Avenue station beside Trinoma)

MRT tickets costs only P15 for the entire length from North Avenue station up to Taft Avenue while LRT fare starts at P10.

LRT will soon be operating from North Avenue (in front of SM City North EDSA and will be linked with MRT North Avenue Station and Trinoma). LRT Roosevelt Station and Balintawak station are now operational with travel time Baclaran in Paranaque City in less than an hour.

No information yet for Market! Market in Bonifacio Global City, Araneta Center (Gateway Mall, Ali Mall), Greenhills Shopping Center, Tiendesitas, Eastwood City Mall, Sta. Lucia, Victory Mall, Starmall, Metropolis, Eton Centris et al

Robinsons Galleria, Robinsons Place Malate and Forum Robinsons (Pioneer) are all closed except Robinsons Tagaytay (similar to SM baguio) which is open and on regular mall hours.

Walter Mart community malls, as observed by Tutubi last year, were open even during Holy Thursday and Good Friday but no information if theaters/cinemas were open for movie screenings.

Live crucifixion re-enactments in the Philippines are always sensationalized by foreign media in the Philippines making foreigners believe the practice is prevalent in the Philippines. This coming Good Friday, throngs of curious people, tourists and foreign media will once again troop to a place in Pampanga called San Pedro Cutud to witness people flagellating themselves before being crucified on an improvised Golgotha complete with wooden crosses and stainless-steel nails driven on their palms and feet.

Note that the people submit to crucifixion for decades now as a form of penitence. The practice though is not really sanctioned by the Catholic Church.

How to get to Cutud, San Fernando, Pampanga:

Driving directions to Cutud: take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) exiting via San Fernando going left towards San Fernando city proper. Turn left under the San Fernando flyover to MacArthur Highway. When you reach a fork on the right with a statue (the so called rotonda), choose the right road (Gen Hizon) that leads to Metropolitan Cathedral of San Fernando (Coordinates: 15°1'42"N 120°41'34"E), and San Fernando City Hall on Consunji St.. Turn left on Sta. Lucia St then follow the road map to Cutud below (map provided by the Government of San Fernando City):



It takes time to figure out the map, to aid in deciphering it, you may refer to the road map via Wikimapia(centered on San fernando City Hall), click here. Should you get lost, ask people for directions (The local government of San Fernando should install street signs and assign traffic aides to guide people to the place).

How to commute to Cutud:

Commuting to Cutud on Good Friday may be a hassle as bus trips are mostly erratic due to lack of passengers in Metro Manila. Nevertheless, you may board a bus of Victory Liner (on EDSA Pasay or Cubao). Get off the Victory Liner Terminal in San Fernando then transfer to a jeep, tricycle to San Pedro Cutud.

As you know, Tutubi's stuck in Metro manila for the Holy Week for a change. This is his first time to spend Holy Week in Manila and just the third time he'll miss Holy Week in Paete, Laguna, his hometown.

Suggested Activities for Holy Week in Metro Manila (a city without the people and traffic)

1. Visita Iglesia in Manila: Visit seven churches according to traditional bisita iglesia itineraries. Here you can see many people walking to churches some barefoot, avoiding riding public transportation, as a form of penitence. (for sure the LRT and MRT trains will stop operating during Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Black Saturday and Easter Sunday and the Pasig River Ferry may also do the same due to lack of people so you're stuck with buses, jeepneys and taxis)

The historic, old church of Malate, usually part of visita iglesia itineraries

2. See fishes and other marine animals at Manila Ocean Park, open throughout the Holy Week from 9am to 9pm.

3. Complete the 14 Stations of the Cross at Nayong Pilipino in Pasay City (it's been ages singe Tutubi visited the place). Starting April 6 (Holy Monday) up to April 12 (Easter Sunday) from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Nayong Pilipino will be opened to the public. The same is true for Nayong Pilipino Clark.

4. Sightseeing tours of Manila: Quiapo, Luneta (Rizal Park), Binondo, Lawton (Liwasang Bonifacio), Sta. Cruz (Q: Is Manila Zoo open during Holy Week?)

5. Drive around Quezon City: Circle, Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife, even visit the Lung Center Sunday Market.

6. Cool down at Wawa Dam, something refreshing and cheap too, in Montalban, Rizal, just an hour from Tutubi's home. Nearby resorts in Antipolo and other Rizal towns are good too.

7. Visit SM and other open malls on Black Saturday and Easter Sunday for those availing of free air-conditioning to escape the searing summer sun...nagpapalamig lang :P

8. Staycation: stay at home vacation - cheap and comfortable with the air-con at full blast.

Do drop by later which of these activities Tutubi did for Holy Week 2009. One thing's for sure, he won't visit the malls for he's not a mall-rat unlike most Filipinos :P

Some SM Malls, mostly those outside Metro Manila, have free parking. Others have flat parking fee from PhP40.00 - PhP45.00 for covered parking and PhP20.00 - PhP25.00 for open parking.

Tutubi has become an information source for his friends asking him all sorts of information that he himself don't know. One of them is Manila Ocean Park's schedule for Holy Week 2013, where some of his friends intend to visit during Holy Week.

To answer their queries, Tutubi called up Manila Ocean Park's contact number just to be sure. It took quite a while for operators to answer the telephone but he got a definite answer:

Note: Normal operating hours of Manila Ocean Park is 9am to 9pm so Holy Week is just an ordinary week for them probably after observing past Holy Week when most malls and parks were closed. Manila Oceanarium's regualr schedule according to their official website is from 10am to 9pm during weekdays but the operator gave 9am to 9pm...just go there early to avoid the expected long lines in the morning.

Manila Ocean Park Entrance Fee: PhP 400.00 for adults
PhP 350.00 for children below four feet in height

SLR/DSLR photography is allowed at the Oceanarium but not flash photography. reminders are posted at the park and guards will confiscate your cameras, even point and shoot cameras, if they see you use flash to take pictures inside. This is done to protect the fishes from being stressed out (there's such a thing as fish stress). (Tip: to take better pictures, use a rubber lens hood that can come in contact with the glass of the aquariums, a CPL (circular polarizer) can but not totally eliminate glare and reflections but lessen sensitivity of the camera.

Manila Ocean Parks facilities include the Oceanarium, the upcoming The Mall and Open Marine Habitat.

For those with cars, there's ample parking space behind Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park (Luneta).

How to get to Manila Ocean Park:

Driving Directions to Manila Ocean Park: From Quiapo, cross Quezon Bridge, pass Lawton then choose right lane of Burgos st where Manila City Hall and the neo-classical National Art Gallery (former National Museum and Senate Building) are, turn right in the direction of Manila Hotel, pass by Manila Planetarium (the nearest hotel to MOP), cross Roxas Boulevard (landmark: Manila Hotel and the Legazpi Monument) then left behind Quirino grandstand.

How to Commute to Manila Ocean Park:

Manila Ocean Park is nearest to LRT UN Avenue station where it's quite a long walk (and hot during Holy Week's summer sun). Suggest you walk to Padre faura Street then board jeepneys going to Pier where the walk is shorter. From Quiapo, board jeepneys with Mabini on their signboards and alight in Luneta when you see the Rizal Monument then walk towards the park.

Tutubi spent his Holy Week break not on the crowded beaches or some secluded place but in his hometown, Paete in Laguna. He reached home by braving a 4.5 hour drive with heavy traffic typical of long weekends and holidays.

A Guide to Holy Week in Paete (for those wishing to witness it next year)

Palm Sunday/Linggo ng Palaspas/Domingo de Ramos

palms are carried to church particularly the palaspas (made from nipa fronds) to celebrate the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem mounted on a donkey.

Holy Wednesday in Paete:

A unique ritual of bathing the mahal na Senor (as what the dead Christ is called) is performed at the home of the owners here.

A popular holy week destination for Metro Manilans, Paete town in Laguna boasts of a traditional life-size images on processions starting on Holy Wednesday where the unique moving saints of Paete re-enact biblical events called salubong at three places in town: at the public market, Plaza Edesan and ending at the town plaza.

The salubong at the palengke (market) is about Mary wiping the blood and sweat of Jesus carrying the cross with operatic voices on the background. The next scene at Plaza Edesan involve Veronica wiping the face of Jesus while the last scene at the town plaza shows the moving Veronica showing her towel's imprinted with Jesus' three faces and Mary's showing her own towel with facial markings. Procession starts after mass at Paete Catholic Church around 6pm.

Maundy Thursday:

A cenaculo (passion of Christ) is staged at the town plaza in the afternoon while many people come to visit the old baroque church famous for it's intricate facade, four large murals and the retablo (tableau) laced with gold leaf part of the Laguna Visita Iglesia

At 6pm, another procession will start, this time by IFI (Iglesia Filipina Independiente) popularly known as Aglipayan or simply Aglipay, with their own life-sized images and salubong. Note the santos are lined up for viewing on Quesada St. (Paete's Main road cutting across the town plaza) and photo opportunity.

It's during this time that people begin to trek to Paete's Tatlong Krus (Three Crosses) to camp there overnight (it's a big, crowded camp site on Good Friday)

Good Friday:

You may visit the home of the owner of the Señor (santo entierro) for a unique ritual of bathing the image. (for photos, please see Sidney's take of the rite here)

on Good Friday, the bells are silent while bamboo clappers and iron bars attached to wooden boards (called Matraka), make noise before the dead Christ

the Mater Dolorosa, the last image of the procession, is actually the exact replica of an image Mariano Madriñan made and received a gold medal during Amsterdam International Exposition of 1883 (note that a gold medal in expositions does not equate to a "first place" finish)

The various carriages with santos start to assemble inside the church. Those who joined the Wednesday procession got new wardrobes and flowers. The Seven Last Words are recited until 3pm when Dapit starts, the body of the dead Christ is brought to church.

Procession will start at 5pm with both Catholics and Aglipayan taking different routes. The procession route will snake its way to pass by the homes of owners of santos who joined the procession of Holy Wednesday where the images are displayed.

You'll notice the Tatlong Krus on Humarap (the hill overlooking Paete, part of Sierra Madre) are lighted with people visible if you have a telescope, binoculars or a telephoto lens.



Black Saturday/Sabado de Gloria

Easter Sunday:

The Salubong with a re-enactment of the resurrected Jesus' meeting with his disciples starting with Mary Magdalene at dawn that includes a procession early in the morning.

Other Holy Week Events in the Philippines:

If you're looking for macabre and much hyped about crucifixions, you may try to view the bloody event in San Pedro Cutud, San Fernando, Pampanga where people volunteer themselves to be crucified under the searing heat of the summer sun for decades now.

Another event of Easter Sunday crucifixion is the so called Taltal (meaning: to remove) in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo,

Other unique celebration on Easter Sunday are the so called Sugat (Cebuano word for meeting) dawn plays in Minglanilla and Argao towns of Cebu.

The best place to be in Holy Week, for some, is just to stay at home. Imagine Metro Manila without the crowds, malls closed but Manila Ocean Park is open.

Did you know why the date of Holy Week is not fixed? Holy Week, particularly Easter Sunday is reckoned from the full moon on or after the Vernal Equinox (equinox means the length of day and night are equal)

A text message from Ferdz on a Friday night asking for information on San Miguel, Manila, the row millionaires, the seat of power in the Philippines that is Malacanang Palace and the birthplace of eponymous beer: San Miguel Beer, took shape with Tutubi accompanying Ironwulf on a photo shoot on the streets of San Miguel district of Manila.

Tutubi, accompanied by J who joined also on a moments notice, waited for Ferdz at San Sebastian Church in Quiapo, took a few pictures of the all steel church then walked towards Legarda St and Mendiola to San Beda College's Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat by the Benedictine monks. The abbey was closed but the attendant let the group in for picture taking of the dark abbey.

Due to growling stomachs, the threesome took a quick snack at KFC at the corner of Mendiola and Concepcion Aguila, proceeded to ask the guards at the gate of Malacanang Palace for directions, didn't go inside for a peek of St. Jude Church (also nearby were Holy Spirit School, La Consolation, V. Mapa, and Centro Escolar University (CEU)) then dragged their itchy feet to San Rafael St, a place known for cheapest dentures, braces and retainers in Manila due to the presence of numerous dental technicians and students of dentistry.

A few meters away entered another world that seemed not to belong to the Manila most people know where grand mansions stood, caught sight of La Cocina de Tita Moning, a fine dining restaurant tucked away in the hidden enclave that is not part of Tutubi's radar screen due to the pricey menu. (Only Ferdz was audacious enough to take pictures of the American era mansions and majestic homes since Tutubi saw guards from a distance in this highly-secured environs)

At the end of San Rafael corner J.P. Laurel St. is a memorial, called Freedom Park, to the victims of the Battle for the Liberation of Manila during the second World War honoring the dead. The memorial is an obelisk about ten meters tall with a dove perched on top.

They turned right as the logical choice since the cynical guards guarding the official residence of the iron lady were watching. This is such a disappointment since the place is so picturesque and should belong to the Filipino people.

On reaching San Miguel Church, a church that was the temporary seat of the Archdiocese of Manila when the Manila Cathedral was bombed to smithereens during World War 2, a wedding was taking place so proceeded only to take pictures of the facade and the bronze statue of St. Michael the Archangel.

Since it was getting dark, they decided to call it day, boarded a jeepney bound for Quiapo, walked J to the terminal of Lealtad-bound jeepneys on Hidalgo St, took Lacson underpass to Plaza Miranda then to the vendor-filled Hidalgo Photographer's Haven, unto SM Sta Cruz, Isetann and LRT Carriedo Station fora ride back to Makati via MRT.

Thus ended another unplanned walking tour of Manila. Sorry Ferdz, your Tutubi-guided tour of Pasig River Ferry will come next time.

How to get to San Miguel, Manila

In Quiapo, near the area under Quezon Bridge, the Quiapo-San Miguel jeepneys pass by Arlegui St then Globo de Oro (where the Golden Mosque is) going to San Miguel. The jeep loops through San Miguel even in front of San Miguel Church.

Directions by car from Makati, make your way to Ayala Bridge, on reaching P. Casal, turn right to Arlegui St. where you can also pass by San Miguel Church looping through Alfonso St.
